Recently Deceased, Science Fiction, Serenity, Time Machine and Star Trek

In the movie Beetlejuice a newly-dead, married couple discovered a book entitled: Handbook For The Recently Deceased.

Insight Editions has recreated the Handbook into a small, hardbound book (with elastic bookmark) as a notebook/journal so you too can keep notes should you ever find yourself dead.

The book looks worn, slightly scuffed and features a retro front illustration of a 1940s/1950s era couple walking off into the sunset.  A special Beetlejuice cover slip is also included.

The inside back cover has a special folder adhered to it so you have some place to keep your dead things in.
It’s to die for!

If anyone knows anything about the history of movie and TV science fiction, its director James Cameron.

After all, he is responsible for some of the greatest sci-fi films ever created: Terminator 1 &2, Abyss, Avatar, Aliens and others.

He, along with films legends Guillermo Del Toro, George Lucas, Christopher Nolan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg give first person accounts of the cinematic world of science fiction in James Cameron’s Story Of Science Fiction.

Exclusive interviews and articles recount the cinematic story of science fiction, complete with art and photos.

Readers get to see pre-production art and set designs, creature concepts and read about how each distinguished director envisioned their individual film classics.

Insider information, little known facts, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and production secrets are complemented with photos and art covering everything from aliens, robots, spaceships and all of the other accoutrements associated with science fiction films and TV.

It’s out of this world!

Regrettably one of the best science fiction TV shows: Firefly, by writer Joss Whedon, only lasted on the air for one year.

The truth be told, the network it appeared on didn’t know what to make of it, nor did network executives understand its premise.

While the show only lasted one season, its legion of fans have kept it alive for years.  A few years back a movie based on Firefly was released: Serenity, to rave reviews.

Marc Semerak presents The Serenity Handbook Firefly: The Official Crew Member’s Guide To The Firefly-Class Series 3 Ship.

This beautifully designed, hardbound book features a spot varnish cover of the Firefly spacecraft on a faux leather cover decorated with type and encryptions.

Inside, detailed schematics of every area of the ship is shown along with weapon and flight capabilities, crew descriptions, color photos of the bridge and interior and exterior, crew technical notes, personal and professional anecdotes and mission notations along with sketches, equipment and shuttle specs and other areas and capabilities of both the ship and its crew.

It is a super-detailed account of the legendary ship, its missions, its crew and it also reveals secrets known only to the crew and their captain.

At one time there was a series of comic books put out under The Classics Illustrated label that adapted literary classics to comic book form.

My favorites were the science fiction and fantasy adaptations.  Of those The Time Machine stood out and was by far my favorite issue.

Since then several comic book companies have tried to adapt the book to sequential art-none of which I have been impressed with.

That has changed. Dobbs and Moreau’s adaption of H.G. Wells The Time Machine is spectacular.

The hardbound book contains sequential art that captures the look and feel of the original novel.  It faithfully adapts the book as it was written, not as it was seen on the Silver Screen.

The writer and artist somehow manage to encapsulate the story perfectly by using dialogue and text at a minimum and illustrating it in a period style and adding luscious colors and effects that enhance the story instead of detracting from it.

Bravo!  Well done!

By far the ordinal Star Trek series is my favorite sconce fiction TV show.  Others have come close but none can beat the cast of the original series: Captain Kirk, Bones McCoy, Mr. Spock, Scotty, Uhura, Chekov, Sulu and the rest of the original crew made the show the classic it is.

Cheesy as its special effects and sets designs were as compared to today’s more slick production standards, Star Trek TOS far outshines all others because of its scripts, concept and sense of adventure.

Star Trek The Official Poster Collection boasts 32 large, removable posters featuring photos of the crew, aliens, ships and movies art of the original series.

The colors jump on the heavy and coated paper stock, making them eye-popping posters.  So many posters to choose from! Which do I display?  I’ve got it-ALL of them!
