The Book

If you love books as much as I do the thought of mutilating, altering, drawing and writing in one is almost unthinkable.  It sends shivers up my spine (pardon the pun).

But, after looking though photographer and designer Julius Friedman's new book: The Book, I've changed my mind.

Imagine taking old books and by tearing them, burning them, combining them, altering them, decorating them with odds and ends, drawing in them and even applying additional script you could create spectacular works of art!

That's just what readers get to witness in this wonderful new hardbound book from Old Stone Press/Atlas Books.  Page after page of full color photographs showcase just what can be done by reinventing, redesigning and re-purposing old books,

Fantastic 3D sculptures of twisted pages, pierced covers, shredded spins, ruffled pages, ravaged volumes and decorated interiors and exteriors bring new life to old, worn-out books.

Re-purposed and brought back to life the collection of written pages defines what it means to see objects not as they, are but what they could be.

When I was teaching art at a local high school a fellow art teacher often used old books in much the same manner.  This taught students to view books not for the sole purpose of reading them but the hidden potential (with a gentle persuading) in their pages.  Bravo!

Airship Enterprise Issues 1 & 2

I love the original Star Trek TV series and Steampunk.  Thanks to Antarctic Press I get to enjoy both with its Airship Enterprise 4-part mini-series.

Join the captain and crew of the Airship Enterprise as they attempt to find the crew of the research vessel Christiaan Huygens.

Captain Janis Tibbs orders the crew of the Airship Enterprise to begin rescue operations as they search for spaceship in distress.

Following the Christiaan Huygens' distress signal they collide with a long cornucopia-shaped living spaceship.  Two of the Airship Enterprise's Outriders are dispatched to the living ship that attacks them and threatens to pull them to their deaths.

Only the quick thinking of the captain saves the Outriders which crash into the giant ship.
Once inside the ship the Outrider occupants discover the crew and wreckage of the Christiaan Huygens-they also discover the occupants of the ship.

The organic ship's 'crew' are part of a hive mind and their High Priestess Aido Quedo wishes to 'assimilate' both the crew of the Airship Enterprise and Christiaan Huygens into the alien ship.

If some of this sounds familiar, it should.  Do I detect hints of the Borg and other Star Trek references?  Doomsday Machine anyone?

Airship Enterprise, as written and drawn by Brian Denham, is a clever (and original) take on a familiar sci-fi series with elements of Steampunk thrown in for good measure.

Great story, great art and awesome colors.  I can't wait for issues 3 and 4!

The World According To Superman

Comic book scribe Louise Simonson, illustrator Marcus To and Insight Editions brings Superman up-to-date in their brand new book celebrating the Man of Steel: The World According To Superman.

A lot has changed in the world of Superman since DC Comics revamped its comic book line with The New 52.

But, although his costume may be slightly changed, his supporting cast shifted and morphed and even his past life has been  'tweaked' Superman basically remains the same.

He's the lone survivor from the doomed planet Krypton who was rocketed to Earth as a baby.  Rescued from his crashed spacecraft by the Kents, young Kal-el (his Kryptonian name) grew up as Clark Kent, in Smallville.

After the death of his adoptive parents Clark moved to Metropolis where he pursued the life of a reporter.

Recently his life has been turned upside down and yet he still believes in truth, justice and the American way.  He defends the downtrodden and protects the Earth from threats both terrestrial and extraterrestrial.

The book delves into the many facets of Superman's life as told by himself.

Readers learn of his origin, his blossoming powers, his civilian career, his adopted city, his home, his Kryptonian past, his friends, his enemies, the Fortress of Solitude, his Kryptonian family, his weaknesses, the Justice League, his love for Wonder Woman and more.
The story is complemented with beautiful full-color illustrations and a few 'extras'.

The Bob's Burgers Burger Book

Fox TV's animated series: Bob's Burger is a resounding hit.  Centered around a 'unique' family that's owns a burger joint and their equally 'special' friends and associates, the show has garnered a loyal following.

One of the highlights of the show are the various types of burgers served at Bob's Burgers.
Touting such memorable names as 'Mediterr-Ain't Misbehavin' Burger' and 'Don't You Four Cheddar 'Bout Me', among others, the culinary cuisine served up has its charms.

Now author Loren Bouchard, writers from the series and blogger Cole Bowden have combined their literary (and culinary) talents to bring readers a burger recipe book from the series laced with jokes and artwork from Bob's Burgers Belcher family.

Just think of it, eating and indigestion all in one book! And it comes to you courtesy of Universe/Rizzoli.  It's 'Real Recipes For Joke Burgers'.

Tony, Taiwan and Nachi

Hasegawa Hobby Kits presents a trio of new war machines: two aircraft and one ship.
The 1/48 Scale Kawasaki Ki-61-I Tei Type 3 Fighter Hien (Tony) "Prisoner of War" Limited Edition WWII Japanese fighter aircraft packs a few surprises.

So maneuverable and deadly was the 'Tony' that the American military was hot to get its hands on this lethal non-traditional Japanese fighter.

Equipped with a inline V engine the small aircraft also boasted more armor, heavier and more deadly weapons, fuel tanks that self-sealed and other 'surprises'.

Minimalist in design the 'Tony' didn't appear that unorthodox at first glance.

Small for a fighter the aircraft sat one pilot, had a standard wingspan and a tri-propeller.  Everything about the aircraft screamed, "ordinary!"  Not so.

The hobby kit duplicates and captures the look of the fighter used by the United States for testing and evaluation.  No doubt taking its cue from the 'Tony' the U.S. military incorporated much of what it learned from the aircraft into its own fleet of fighters.

As with all Hasegawa Hobby Kits the 'Tony' kit comes with highly detailed instructions for assembling, painting and decaling and parts detach easily from part trees with little or no flashing and fit together snuggly with no mismatched surfaces.

The 1/48 Scale F-16B Plus Fighting Falcon "Taiwan Airforce Flying Tigers" Limited Edition fighter jet model kit recreates the impressive Taiwan fighter in perfect detail right down to its landing gear.

A superior aircraft that is both light, less expensive than most fighters and capable of impressive aerodynamic capabilities the F-16B is easy to upkeep and ready in an instant for action.

Fast and capable of landing, re-arming and taking off in a short period of time the F-16B is regarded as one of the most versatile aircraft in existence and respected by military forces around the globe.

The model recreates the aircraft in perfect miniature from external tanks, twin cockpit, single engine and deadly arsenal.

I've always been a sucker for large naval vessels-especially vintage WWII heavy cruisers and the like.

So it should come as no surprise that my favorite model of three is the 1/700 Scale Japan Navy Heavy Cruiser Nachi Full Hull Limited Edition model kit.

What a beauty with its full armament, cranes, conning tower, railing, smokestacks and wooden deck.

Part of the Myoko class heavy cruisers the ship served in the Philippines, Its battery of guns: ten 8-inch guns and eight 127 mm guns along with its 12 Type 93 Long Lance Torpedoes made the Nachi a worthy adversary.

Unfortunately minor repairs stuck the ship in the Philippines at the end of the war where it was eventually sunk by the Allies.

The ship model comes with a display stand that showcases the entire ship from tip to tip and propellers to stern.  It's an impressive model recreating a time when navies could turn the tide of war.

Perry Mason Movie Collection Volume 5

Actor Raymond Burr became famous in his role as defense attorney Perry Mason that shown on CBS during the late 1950s and early to mid-1960s.

Burr perfectly captured the persona of Perry Mason: logical, passionate and brilliant.  He, along with his secretary and a private investigator, managed to solve crimes and expose the real criminals all in 60 minutes.

Burr would later go on and star as crusty, wheelchair-bound detective Ironside in the series of the same name.  But, Perry Mason is the role he is best known for.

Back in the 1980s CBS brought Burr back as Perry Mason in a series of movies.  This allowed the cast and crew to weave much more complicated storylines, visit remote locales and delve more into the characters.

Burr's health was beginning to deteriorate and as the movies progressed he started walking with a cane and was eventually was confined to a wheelchair.

Sadly not long after the movie series ended Burr passed away.

CBS have released all of the original Perry Mason TV series episodes and made-for-TV movies.

The Volume 5 Movie Collection sees Raymond Burr once again starring as Perry Mason.  It's obvious Burr's health was deteriorating as supporting cast members took a larger role in the movies.

Regardless of the cast shift the Perry Mason magic is still there and the movies make memorable and fine entertainment.

Six movies make up the set with Burr appearing in the first two.  Even with his absence the magic is still there in thrilling courtroom and crime scene investigations.

'Cuda, Smokey, Interceptor, Custom, Firebird and Hitch

Are you tired of the same old diecast cars you find in 'Mega' stores?  Do you yearn for 1:64 Scale diecast cars and vehicles that look like they've taken a large vehicle and shrunk it down in size retaining all of its details?  Is it time to put aside 'kiddie' diecast and start buying and collecting 'big boy' diecast?

Here's your chance.  Greenlight Collectibles delivers high-quality, perfectly scaled, packed full of details, miniature versions of cars and vehicles!

Recently Greenlight has broadened its retail outlet availability and I am excited!  Not just for myself, but for anyone who is into diecast vehicles.

Each Greenlight vehicle or vehicle set comes packed in a sealed transparent package that can  both hang or stand on display.  Full detail of each vehicle is on the back of the bubble packs along with a listing of other vehicles in the same set.

Whether you take your vehicles out of the bubble pack or prefer to leave the vehicles in the package both the vehicles and packages are rugged and durable.

Periodically Greenlight releases complete series of vehicles based around central themes or types of vehicles.

Greenlight graciously provided me  six examples of vehicles from six different series-all of which are awesome!

From Greenlight's GL Muscle Series comes its 1970 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda.  This was 'the' muscle car every teenager wanted, who grew up in the 1970s (myself included).

A two-door sedan, the miniature blue 'Cuda features a hood scoop, plenty of chrome trim, a black roof, full blue interior seats, a super-detailed dash and custom chrome wheels with rubber tires.  Included with the diecast is a trading card of the 'Cuda in action.

Burt Reynolds most famous movie is Smokey And The Bandit.  His black (with gold trim) 1977 Pontiac T/A is perfectly recreated in miniature including its 'T' Top, huge hood decal, air scoop and custom wheels.  Part of Greenlight's Hollywood series this solid metal (as are all of Greenlight's diecast) is a Limited Edition release and is sure to fly off shelves.  Get yours quick!

Hot Pursuit showcases the 2014 Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicle with all its bells and whistles-literally!).  With its white roof, roof lights, black body with white driver and passenger front doors and its heavy duty frame this is one California Highway Patrol vehicle you don't want to mess with.  Take a moment to check out the ultra-detailed interior.

The 1967 Ford Custom from Greenlight's Country Roads selection is a beautiful aqua four-door with a hood that opens revealing its engine, long body, chrome bumpers and trim and so finely detailed you can even see its steering wheel and dash.

The American Edition Series 9 Motor World Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is a sweet little red and black four-seat convertible with uni-body style, integrated grill and mirrors and enough horsepower to send you flying down the highway.

My favorite of the six figures is the Hitch & Tow Limited Edition, Series 4 1962 Dodge D-100 and Shasta Airflyte.

The double your pleasure, double your fun red and white truck and travel trailer has it all with matching wheels and rims, classic 1960's styling and nostalgia seeping from their frames.

I love the long-bed truck with its white roof, whitewall tires, white front and rear bumpers and its clean, no clutter cabin.  Hitch it up to the Airflyte travel trailer with its red and white and white paint scheme, roof vent, propane tank, eight windows and awesome aerodynamic design and the good old days live again.  There's even an adjustable trailer jack!  What more can you ask?

Greenlight Collectibles are some of the best diecast vehicles you'll find anywhere and now with its expanded retail outlet availability things are about to change in the diecast world.

The Good Dinosaur

Imagine if instead of being wiped out by meteor that struck the Earth millions of years ago (as some believe) that dinosaurs survived because the meteor missed the Earth.

Imagine still that the dinosaurs evolved to the point that they could talk, farm, hunt and cooperate.  Some even became farmers.

Born the runt of a farming family of dinosaurs Arlo is not only small but timid and scared of just about anything.

Hoping to help Arlo make his mark, Arlo's dad assigned him to stop the 'critter' who is stealing their corn.

Arlo captured the critter but was unable kill it and lets it go.  That critter was a human boy. Arlo and his father set out after the boy and a flash flood killed Arlo's dad.

Later, while helping his mother bring in the winter harvest Arlo discovered the boy once again stealing the corn.  He chased him and both he and the boy fell into the nearby river.  They were washed away.

And so begins the adventure of a lifetime for Arlo.
Eventually the boy (Spot) and Arlo become friends and face many dangers together and take part in many adventures-including teaming up with a family of T-Rex.

Along the way Arlo discovers the true meaning of friendship, that there are different types of courage and that everyone, dinosaurs and humans alike, are unique and have worth.

Pixar/Disney does it again in a spectacular new computer animated movie containing lovable and unforgettable characters, spectacular visual effects and more.  Own it today on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy.

Daredevil #168

For years Marvel Comics' Daredevil title produced lackluster stories.  It had its high points of course such as when Gene Colan and Barry Smith illustrated the title.

For a short period Daredevil teamed with the Black Widow so both heroes shared the title.

During the late 1970s Daredevil sales were dipping dangerously close to the point that the title would be cancelled until a young artist (and soon to be writer) started on the title.

That writer/artist was Frank Miller.
Barely into his twenties Miller revitalized Daredevil's book.  A huge fan of film noir movies and crime novels and of Golden Age artist Will Eisner's Spirit comic book character, Miller transformed Daredevil into a dark, edgy title whose hero fought crime in dirty back alleys and less than savory criminal settings.

Suddenly Daredevil became hot and before long Daredevil ranked as Marvel Comics second best-selling title behind The Uncanny X-Men.

This came about in no small part by Miller's scripts and shadow-laden and dynamic art assisted by the inks of Klaus Janson.

Daredevil hit its artistic high when Miller introduced Elektra, one-time lover of Daredevil's alter ego, Matt Murdock.

Bitter after the murder of her father, Elektra turns to crime.  She trains to become an assassin, who eventually faces off against Daredevil.

Still in love with her Matt reluctantly fights Elektra and in the end realizes that their love is doomed as they are on opposites side of the law.

Interesting enough on the cover of issue #168 Elektra's name is spelt wrong as Elecktra.
Some issues later Elektra is killed by Bullseye only to be resurrected even later. Over the past few decades she has wavered between being a heroine or villainess.

Daredevil #168 is on the 'must have' list for serious comic book collectors.

Millennium Falcon, X-Wings, Tie Fighter and Shuttle

Ever since the Star Wars films were introduced Revell models has been there producing exact miniature duplicates of many of the ships and vehicles seen in the films
.
They've always been a big hit with fans and with the premiere of the new Star Wars film: The Force Awakens, Revell has once again outdone itself when it comes to capturing, in miniature, key spacecraft from the film and translating them into plastic model kits.

Revell makes it easy for the young modeler to create thier very own Star Wars vehicles.  Revell has taken the muss and fuss away out of model-making with its SnapTite MAX Star Wars
models.

No glue, no paint, no decals-each model is pre-painted and decaled, snaps together in (well-a snap!) and are ready to display in no time at all.

Each model comes in a full color box complete with a full-color illustration/painting on its cover of whatever vehicle is inside.  Easy-to-understand instructions are also included.

Each model captures perfectly the look and details of each ship right down to the hull lines, surface sensors and equipment, painted and decaled surfaces and more.

Models include ships from The Force Awakens.

After too long an absence the Millennium Falcon returns (a little worse for wear) but just as impressive.  Every surface detail is present from the loading bay, pilot cockpit, sensor and shield emitters, weapons and landing gear. It's a beauty that Han Solo would be proud of.

There are two X-Wings: a Resistance X-Wing Fighter and Poe's characteristic silver and  yellow X-Wing Fighter.  Both are updated versions of the famous fighter with extra engine enhancements and weapons.  Either way, they make for formidable foes against The New Order.

The First Order Special Forces Tie Fighter is even more menacing looking than the original Tie Fighter. Accented in red, the new Tie-Fighter is more maneuverable, deadlier and wickedly cool.  Check out its weapons, cockpit and redesigned wing panels.

Kylo Ren's Command Shuttle reminds me of the Emperor's Shuttle in Return Of The Jedi.
Kylo Ren's Shuttle has longer wings that extend or retract and fold when in flight or landing.

Equipped with four laser banks, the heavily armored Shuttle is both intimidating and impressive.

All of Revell's Star Wars models look great once assembled and when displayed make perfect dioramas of scenes for the new movie.

Death Star, R2-D2 and Darth Vader Hand With Lightsaber

Without a doubt the Star Wars films are the most popular (and profitable) science fiction films of all time.

Back in 1977 when George Lucas and 20th Century Fox released the first Star Wars film: A New Hope, both George and Fox were skeptical of its success and hoped to at least make back the money spent on filming and promoting the film.  They hoped to break even.

Boy, were they surprised!  Star Wars went on to make millions of dollars for both the studio and Lucas and completely changed how movies are made, produced, promoted and edited.

Star Wars merchandise was slow to arrive at first (mainly because film promotional material (especially toys) tended not to sell in great numbers (there were a few exceptions of course) so the demand for toys caught Kenner off guard.

So unexpected was the first Star Wars film that Kenner Toys didn't have the Star Wars toys ready for distribution when the film came out so kids had to send in a waver and wait for the first wave of toys.

Star Wars merchandise can be seen everywhere.  Toys, cloths, books, DVDs, magazines-the list goes on and on.

It's difficult to come up with any Star Wars merchandise that is unique-but 3D Light FX has done just that with its series of Star Wars 3D Deco Lights.

By recreating key props from the films (some at actual size) and placing LED lights inside of them 3D Light FX has created the ultimate series of night lights and objects of conversation.

The Death Star 3D Deco Light (like all of 3D Light FX's 3D Deco Lights) come in an attractive heavy cardboard display box decorated (in this case) with Star Wars images.  A clear plastic front allows would-be purchasers to see the 3D Deco Light within.

The Death Star appears to be smashing though a wall or any flat surface.  First a transparent panel with a crack pattern is placde on the flat surface.  Then the Death Star (like all other 3D Deco Lights) is attached to the flat surface over the transparent panel to a wall or flat surface with a screw(s) in a screw anchor(s), securing it in place.

Half of the Death Star protrudes from the wall.  When the light switch is clicked on the Death Star lights up from the interior.  The entire Death Star trench lights up as do hundreds of holes over its surface.  It makes for a truly eerie and formidable sight.

Without a doubt the droid R2-D2 is the favorite non-humanoid character in the films (C3-PO comes in a close second).  The R2-D2 3D Deco Light comes with a wall attachment and cracked panel.

The small droid appears to be crashing through a wall.  Most of his silver and blue dome shows along with the upper three-quarters of his torso showing his front panels and upper leg joints.
When lit R2-D2 emits light from his upper dome and front dome lights.

Perhaps the greatest cinema villain of all times is Darth Vader.  The Darth Vader Hand With Lightsaber features the Dark Sith Lords' gloved hand holding his trademark Lightsaber.

Once mounted on a wall it appears as if Darth has smashed thought the wall, Lightsaber in hand) and ready to strike.  Turn on the Lightsaber and it glows an eerie red, just like Darth's Lightsaber.

All of the Star Wars 3D Deco Lights look like the authentic items from the Star Wars films right down to the colors, details and sculpts.  All run on batteries, are safe to touch as they use LED lights that emits no heat and are perfect for kids of all ages.
