TwoMorrows Publishing dedicates Alter Ego #116 to the memory of comic book great, Joe Kubert.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

Based on the Kerry Greenwood novels the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries Series 1 episodes on DVD from Acorn Media Group stars Essie Davis as detective Miss Phryne Fisher.

Set in Melbourne during the 1920s the show is a high-fashion, high-society crime/mystery show that dares to delve into the seedy part of life.

Miss Fisher appears to be devil-may-care and carefree but beneath her happy-as-a-lark exterior beats a profound and troubled heart.

One of the pitfalls of going on vacation is the tourist traps.  There is nothing worse than being caught on the treadmill of canned tourist attractions and feeling like an unknown face in a crowd.


When I go someplace I want to go where the locals go, eat the food they eat, stay at the places they stay and mingle in with the local population.

Finally my plead is answered!

Foyle's War Set 1

Leave it to the British to create detective/murder mystery/suspense TV series and do them better than anyone else.


Here in the United States most cop shows are non-stop violence, explosions, blood-spattered, clip-a-minute hodgepodges of rapid fire entertainment where viewers seldom get to solve a crime by using their brains.


Most, not all, are nothing more than hot actresses or actors eye candy that depend more on shock value than true suspense.  While some tension is created American audiences don't appreciate what a slow burn is when it comes to suspense-the British do.


One such example of an exemplary detective TV series is Foyle's War starring Michael Kitchen.


Set during WWII in Hastings, Mr. Kitchen plays DCS Christopher Foyle who serves as detective chief superintendent.  He works crimes on the home front and contends not only with domestic issues but the effects of the war on his community.


In Set 1 Foyle deals with a murdered conscientious object, a would be saboteur, a Nazi murder and a plot to steal British art treasures.  All are edge-of-your-seat suspense stories with so many twist and turns that viewers can become dizzy and yet---Doyle unravels each.

The Acorn Media DVD extras include interviews of cast, crew and the director.
