When Andy Griffith called it quits and decided to end his
run on CBS TV’s Andy Griffith Show TV series many believed it was the end of an
era-and in sense they were right.
Andy was moving on but he was not insensitive to his
audience. He stuck around for awhile to
ensure that the new Andy Griffith Show spin-off: Mayberry R.F.D. had a proper
send off.
Many of the old show’s original cast showed up to kick off
the new series and many of the long-standing storylines came to a conclusion:
one of the main characters finally got married!
Ken Berry (the star of F-Troop) fit the bill as the new
leading man in the new series. He played
Sam Jones, a widowed farmer, who is raising his young son. Longtime cast member of the Andy Griffith Show,
Aunt Bee, made the transition over to new series as Sam’s live-in housekeeper
and many of the former Griffith cast stayed with the new series since it took
place in Mayberry.
Warner Bros. has compiled the complete 26-episode First
Season into a new DVD collection that continues the wholesome, down earth humor
of the Andy Griffith Show albeit with a new cast and some old favorites. Look for Goober, Aunt Bee, Howard, Emmett,
Sam, Mike and Millie as they bring good ol’ Americana to the small screen.
