20 Posters, Posters and More Heroes & Heroines

I’m familiar with most of the well known Japanese Anime, Manga and Video Games.  I’m no expert by any means.

 

As I’ve mentioned before Japanese Anime and Manga were created by the Japanese at the end of WWII primarily during the American occupation of Japan.  Japanese story-telling art has been around since ancient times as evident in prints, pottery and the like..

Japanese artists and animators took inspiration from American comic books and animated cartoons and developed original works of Anime (animation) and Manga (comic books).

Like all things Japanese art Anime and Manga have deep cultural links to Japanese society, culture, religion and day-to-day life.  Both art forms are ripe with symbolism and cultural references.  Japanese video games also share those traits.

Clothing, the color of a character’s hair and other physical attributes represent many different things.  Anime, Manga and video games not only contain action and adventure but also carefully orchestrated quiet scenes, character development and social commentary.

The Japanese influence on American popular culture is evident and its influence also extends to story-telling, pacing and character design.

I’ve said all this to emphasize that Japanese Anime, Manga and video games are unique and while they have their genesis several decades past they have developed into their own individualized art forms.

As a graphic designer myself I can’t help but be impressed by the layouts, illustrations, type selection, color palettes and brilliant use of each.

Equally impressive, but smaller than the poster collections, the More Heroes & Heroines square bound book collection of Japanese Video Game + Animation Illustration almost overloaded my sense of sight with its stunning colors, fantastic illustrations, bizarre concepts and impressive gallery of art.

Awesome is the best word to describe this collection of character designs, presentations pieces, promotional art, mood pieces, hi-tech gadgetry, weapons, transport and environments.

It’s easy to see why Japanese Anime, Manga and video games have transformed comic books, animation and video games all over the world.  I’m impressed and I know you will be too.
