While the super folk have cropped up in movies and TV shows for some time it wasn’t until the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked into high gear that the genre really took off.
To be sure Marvel had some success with superhero movies in previous years with the X-Men, Spider-Man, Blade, etc. but it was the first Iron Man movie that catapulted the super hero movie into the spotlight.
DC Comics had kick-started the superhero movie craze with the release of its first Superman movie in the late 1970s and in the late 1980s with Batman, directed by Tim Burton.
For nearly a full decade afterwards superhero movies languished until the first X-Men movie premiered.
Of course not only DC and Marvel superhero movies were produced-there were others based on smaller publishers‘ properties, but overall most movies were movies starring characters from the big two.
