The Silver Age DC Comics, by Paul Levitz, is one of my favorite books about comics. I’m a huge fan of the Silver Age, especially as it pertains to DC Comics and Marvel Comics.
DC is responsible for the genesis of the Silver Age when it brought back the Flash, albeit as a new character based on science. Barry Allen gets doused with chemical when lightning strikes and he suddenly finds himself super fast.
From out of that one incident the entire Silver Age of DC Comics was born. Soon other revamped and updated Golden Age DC characters appeared like The Atom, Hawkman, Green Lantern and many more.
Not long afterward new and original Silver Age characters and titles appeared brought on by the impressive issues sold about the revamped heroes.
The Silver Age Of DC Comics book is bulging with art (interior and covers) spotlighting every major and second tier characters and groups.
How can you go wrong with an oversize hardbound book all wrapped up in a silver dust jacket? Talk about classy.
Inside the entire history of DC Comics in the Silver Age is recounted that includes original art, sketches, covers, interior pages and comprehensive text and captions.
It took me literally hours to read and peruse through this book. Occasionally I’ll go back and look over it again only to find even more stuff I missed the first time.
Learn about the artists, writers, production staff and the inner workings (along with the office gossip) about the era and the publisher that changed comic books forever and for the better.
If it were not for DC Comics taking a chance and reintroducing classic characters (albeit updated for the time) there would be no comic book industry as we know it today.
