Fantastic Four The First 60 Years: Comics, Creators, Characters, Culture

Sixty years ago I was a young boy. My mother and I were walking down a city street in Pontiac, Michigan. We were on our way to the Salvation Army store.

About a block away from the store was a sidewalk magazine and newspaper vendor.

Hanging from one side of his booth was wire comic book rack. I was at the ripe old age of nine and had been reading comic books (mostly DC and Harvey) since I was five years old.

While mom looked at the magazines I spotted a comic book that look completely different that the other titles.

On its cover was a quartet of people fighting a huge green monster breaking though a city street. Besides the monster there was a humanoid shaped, rocky, orange smaller monster. Upon looking closer I realized he was also a superhero. What!?

I asked my mom for a dime and purchased Fantastic Four #1, rolled it up and stuck it in my back pocket to read later.

I can hear the collective groan from comic book collectors everywhere. If I had known then what I know now I never would have mishandled the comic book.

Titan Magazines has just released Fantastic Four The First 60 Years: Comics, Creators, Characters, Culture, both as a softback and hardback magazine.

The publication traces the FF from the title’s genesis and the launch of the Marvel Comics Universe all through the decades up to the present time.

As a kid and young teenager my favorite FF stories took place in the 1960s with the introduction of such characters as Doctor Doom, Galactus, The Silver Surfer, The Black Panther, Moleman, The Inhumans and other incredible characters that helped form the fledgling Marvel Universe.

I marveled at the FF adventures into the Microverse, The Negative Zone, outer space, time travel and other incredible locations.

What made the titles so special was the interplay of the characters one to another. They often squabbled, broke up, disagreed, had personal problems, were emotional and most of all acted like real human beings not just cookie cutter superheroes.

Writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby let their imaginations run wild as they created some of the most incredible stories ever devised for comic books.

From the FF Lee and Kirby, along with other Marvel artists and writers, would expand the Marvel Universe to include hundreds of characters, locations, storylines and more.

The magazine follows The Fantastic Four through the decades. Interesting and informative text filled with fascinating facts is accompanied by cover and interior art both in color and in black and white.

Key stories, events, character and story crossovers and special artist and writers spotlights fill out the issue.

If you are a Fantastic Four fan then this is the magazine for you. More than just containing pretty pictures the magazine elves into what makes the FF so special and its importance in the Marvel Universe and the history of comic books.

Simon & Simon Season One

One Of The Best Classic TV Shows From The 1980s!

Back in the 1980s Thursday was TV night for my wife and I.

At 8:00 PM on Thursday nights Tom Selleck starred as super hunk Magnum. P.I.

At 9:00 PM, after Magnum, Simon & Simon ran.

It featured brother A.J. and Rick Simon who ran their own private detective agency in San Diego, California.  They were joined by their mother, A.J.‘s girlfriend, her father and Rick’s dog.  A.J. drove a classic 50s car and Rick a beat-up old pick-up truck.

The two brothers were polar opposites.

A.J. preferred suits, gourmet food and high-class living.  Rick was a Vietnam veteran, who wore a cowboy hat and boots, dressed mostly in denim and loved wine, women and song.

Though opposites, their combined talents proved an asset when solving cases.

Gerald McRaney played Rick and Jameson Parker portrayed A.J.  They clicked perfectly and you believed they were brothers.

The first season saw the series starting to define its theme music and opening and closing sequences.

It also witnessed the characters Rick and A.J.’s personalities and quirks being established and defined by the actors as well as that of the supporting cast.

It’s interesting watching the evolution of the characters, how their conflicting yet complementary personalities mesh and how the premise of the show was cemented.

Included with the Simon & Simon Season One DVD collection from Universal Studios is a special about the 1980s TV programs.

Joshua 1:9 (NIV) “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

The Silver Surfer #10

The Silver Surfer, Galactus, Nova, Eternity, The Celestials, The Fantastic Four, the Kree and Death-it doesn’t get much more epic or exciting than this!

In this issue Galactus requests that The Silver Surfer train his new herald Nova.

Reluctantly Nova agrees to go along, as does The Surfer.  After all The Silver Surfer and Galactus have never been on the best of terms.  The only reason The Silver Surfer agrees to the task is because Galactus freed him from his servitude.

As The Surfer and Nova prepare to depart Galactus assures Nova that he will be fine until she returns.

The Surfer bids Nova to pause, hide and to follow Galactus.  The Surfer wishes to show Nova what and who Galactus really is.

Galactus departs unaware he is being followed.  Shortly he meets up with Eternity and when he does so he sheds his human appearance and appears in his true form-a being of pure energy.  Nova is amazed and completely surprised by the revelation.

Meanwhile a Skrull masquerading as Nebula has taken the throne as Supreme Leader of the Kree.  It’s a subtle subterfuge and deadly to ‘his’ lover.

Elsewhere Galactus has changed into his human form and ponders the Eternity he must endure as he feeds.

Only one force has no fear of Galactus and that is Death itself.

WOW!  Marvel Comics
The Silver Surfer #10 really expands on the persona of Galactus.  To me this issue contains one of the most important tales as it pertains to Galactus, The Silver Surfer and Galactus' other heralds.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV) “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Peanuts: “Good ol’ Charlie Brown”

Good Old Charlie Brown And Friends!

Playing Mantis/Memory Lane produced a series of Peanuts characters sets back in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The sets came in a large rectangular boxes with clear viewing plastic screens in the front.

The various figures were secured in place by a form fitting plastic cocoon.

In the “Good ol’ Charlie Brown’ figure set toy collectors receive Snoopy, Woodstock, Lucy and Schroeder along with their various accessories.

Starting from the left the first figure seen is Schroeder.  The blond hair musical maestro is posed in a sitting position with both arms out and his hands in a piano playing position.

The partially articulated figure is dressed in a green and black horizontal strips t-shirt, black pants, green socks and brown shoes.

Accessories include a small child size yellow piano and a bust of Beethoven.

Next to Schroeder is Snoopy’s avian friend Woodstock.

The cute little yellow bird has a smile on its face and comes with a bird nest perched atop a small scraggly tree with spare green leaves.

Next up is that lovable Beagle pup Snoopy.  Solid white with black ears, the Snoopy figure has his characteristic grin and happy eyes.  He also wears a collar.

Look for Snoopy’s red water bowl and the gray birdbath he frequents to watch Woodstock ice skate on.

Last is that rambunctious, grumpy and loud-moth tough girl Lucy.

She wears a short sleeve yellow dress with twin black strings, yellow socks and black and white shoes.

Included with Lucy is her ’The Doctor Is In-Psychiatric Help 5 Cents” red/orange stand with sign and three-leg stool.

All of the figures are exact 3D duplicates of their 2D namesakes right down to their hairstyles, clothing and expressions.

Paint application is excellent and clean and articulation is almost invisible.  Sculpt work is precise, crisp and perfect 3D representations of the characters.

“Good grief!’ it’s a great set of figures!

Isaiah 53:6 (NKJV) “All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”

Binge-Worthy Zits

Teenagers-Who Can Figure Them Out?

Having raised two teenagers my wife and I can attest to and bare witness to the shenanigans, totally illogical and crazy things our kids managed to get into.

That’s why the new Zits softbound book collection of daily and Sunday comics strip contained in Binge-Worthy Zits by Jeremy Scott and Jim Borgman and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing, depicts teenagers so well.

The illustration of the star’s comic strip: Jeremy, explains it all.

Jeremy is seen slouched over a chair with food scattered about and using his laptop.

As a former high school teacher I dealt with teenagers of all sorts. The one thing they had in common was their unpredictability.

This is never more evident than in this new Zits collection.

Just look what Jeremy and his teenage friends are up to:

  • Trying to explain the internet to their parents
  • Rock and Roll
  • School lockdowns
  • Phone apps that are a little too personal
  • Research paper horrors
  • Bad cloths choices
  • Computer memory and speed withdrawals
  • Surprise parties
  • Teenage hygiene
  • Teenager substitution
  • Wi-fi
  • Covid safety
  • Fishing with dad
  • Phone maintenance
  • Age jokes
  • Hotness hibernation
  • And much, much more.....

If you are raising or have raised teenagers, know teenagers or completely avoid teenagers then this is the one book you just gotta have. Think of it as a teenager primer.

Proverbs 4:7
(NKJV) “Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.”

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles Trading Cards

Indiana Jones As A kid And A Teenager!?

Waaaay back in the early 1990s George Lucas created a TV series starring Indian Jones as a young boy and teenager.

Episodes followed young Indy as he traveled with his father and mother (along with his nanny) around the world, grew to young manhood, entered the military and began his archeologist career.

The series gave George Lucas the opportunity to test new computer technology and filming techniques that would suit his needs when he released the enhanced and rejuvenated original Star Wars Trilogy using the techniques he learned with Young Indy.

The show was green lit because of the success of the Indiana Jones film The Last Crusade a few years earlier.  Fans were begging from more Indy stories and this was a way to satisfy their wants.

It also gave George the chance to delve to incorporate important historical events into the series and hopefully teach young viewers.

Each episode began with Old Indy, having lost one eye and using a cane, recalling his early adventures to youngsters, strangers or whoever would listen willingly or unwillingly. Unfortunately on the released DVD collection the Old Indy sequences are absent.

The episodes would then continue with either Indy as a young child or as a teenager or young man.  Sean Flannery starred as Indiana Jones.

Pro Set Trading Cards created a set of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles Trading Cards with 36 Packs per Box, 10 Cards per Pack and including 3-D Cards and Viewers in every Pack.  114 Cards make up the Set.

The Cards came in a custom Young Indiana Jones Box with images and logo from the series on its cover.

Each Pack has similar images.

All the Cards are printed on heavy-coated paper stock making them really pop!

In addition the 3-D Cards are printed on matte paper and as an extra added bonus special folded Treasure Cards contains illustrations of many of the articfacts and maps Indy encountered on his adventures are also included.

For fans of the Indiana Jones franchise will discover that the Cards make for a fine visual library of some of Indy’s early adventures that helped make him the man he was.

Full color photos from the series’ entire episodes highlight the key events in each.

I am blessed in that I have one full box unopened and one opened.

Enola Holmes The Graphic Novels Book One

Sherlock Holmes Has A Younger Sister!?

Let me plead innocence, ignorance and being uninformed. I had no idea that the PBS TV mini series Enola Holmes was based on the Enola Holmes novels by Nancy Springer.

I love the PBS TV series. It is great fun with an intriguing storyline, lots of action and humor.

Shame on me. I plan on reading the young adult novels. In the meantime I’ll settle for Serena Blasco and Andrews McMeel Publishing’s Enola Holmes Graphic Novel series, starting with Book One.

I absolutely love the art of Serena Blasco. Tanya Gold provides the translation into English. Partly ink, partly watercolor that illustrations really capture the look and feel of the time period the novels are set in.

Enola stands out with her brilliant red hair and the artist’s talent for shifting and moving the various viewpoints and mastery of costumes, settings and locations really make reading the stories a delight.

Three Enola Holmes novels are adapted including The Case Of The Missing Marquess, The Case Of Left-Handed Lady and The Case Of The Bizarre Bouquets.

Join Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes’ younger 14-year old sister Enola as she proves time and again that she is just as brilliant, resourceful and cunning as her two older siblings.

Also included in the book are Secret Notebook observations and illustrations and book covers.

My grand-kids are too young to appreciate the graphic novels but I plan on holding onto them to give them to them when they get older.

Isaiah 55:8 (NKJV) “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.”

Batman And Superman Battle Of The Super Sons

Superhero Heirs!

What happens when the sons of Superman and Batman come face-to-face?

That’s the premise behind the new DC Animated Movie Batman And Superman Battle Of The Super Sons on 4K Ultra-HD/Blu-Ray/Digital Code courtesy of Warner Bros./Discovery.

When Superman’s son John meets Batman’s son Damien they don’t exactly hit it off.

As a trained assassin by his grandfather Damien has far more experience in battle than John whom as of their first meeting doesn’t have the same powers as his dad Superman.

But that all changes when Starro takes over the minds and bodies of humans including the Justice League.

It’s up to John as Superboy (now with super powers) and Damien (Robin) to thwart Starro’s plans and save humanity, their parents and The Justice League.

But, can two young boys put aside their differences and as team face-off against some of the most powerful superheroes in the universe?

Once again Warner Bros./Discovery releases a top-notch animated movie starring DC Comics heroes.

The animation is first-rate, the voice cast is perfect for each character and the action, adventures, danger, intrigue and suspense never cease.

Also included a Super Sons featurette and two classic DC Comics animated shorts.

You Need This Book Like A Fish Needs A Bicycle

A Hilarious Shark Attack!

Years ago if you had told me that a comic strip about a man-eating shark along with his wife and aquatic friends would be the stars of a hilarious and popular comic strip I would have thought you were daft.

I was wrong. Sherman’s Lagoon has proved so popular that the comic strip has just released its 27th collection of daily and Sunday strips courtesy of Andrews McMeel Publishing.

I gotta say there are some seriously funny gags in You Need This Book Like A Fish Needs A Bicycle: TheTwenty-Seventh Sherman’s Lagoon Collection. Sherman’s Lagoon has rocketed up to be one of my top favorite comic strips.

Even with the limited space modern strips are restricted to in today’s newspapers Sherman’s Lagoon’s creator Jim Toomey still turns out some memorable jokes and gags.

You have to love Sherman’s Lagoon’s main cast:

  • Sherman the dim-witted but lovable star of the strip
  • Megan, Sherman’s wife, who puts up with his insanity, stupidity and schemes
  • Hawthorne the Hermit Crab the ultimate shyster and huckster
  • Fillmore the sea turtle whose insecurity knows no bounds
  • Ernest the fish with the brain of genius and the body of a tasty morsel
  • Other characters include a sun-bathing polar bear and aquatic characters of all sorts

In this compilation of strips, Sherman and his buddies are up their usual shenanigans.

Here’s just a few things you can expect to encounter in this collection:

  • The Wandering Meatloaf
  • The London Fatberg
  • Beach Apes
  • Crabwarts Academy Of Magic
  • Hawthorne’s rat tail
  • Fillmore’s flamingo legs
  • Sherman’s rhino horn
  • A super secret compound
  • A flying car
  • Aliens
  • A swordfish motivational coach

It’s a truly hilarious collection all neatly bound up in an oversize softbound book. Take a chance, dive in, swim around and hope that Sherman has already had lunch.
