I’ve been
a big fan of Mike Mignola’s ‘Hellboy’ character ever since he created him.
The idea
of a demon from Hell becoming a good guy chasing down other supernatural
threats is unique and a whole lot of fun to read.
In a special
one-shot issue: ‘Hellboy And The B.P.R.D.: 1955” Secret Nature’, courtesy of Dark Horse Comics, Hellboy and his friend
meet up with a demon with a similar origin as Hellboy-only this demon is fully
grown, ravenous and extremely ticked off.
It seems
that in 1955 Oregon cattle farmers are having their stock not just slaughtered but
ripped apart, disemboweled and partially eaten.
When a
local farmer contacts the B.P.R.D. he has no problem accepting Hellboy’s
bizarre appearance but is a bit taken back by Hellboy’s companion: a black man.
Hellboy
gets a lesson in prejudice, even after he and his companion manage to subdue
the beast and send it back to Hell.
I’m so
used to Mike Mignola’s art style it took me a bit to warm up to artist Shawn
Martinbrough’s art.
But after
a few pages I realize he was the perfect choice for the book as he captures the
look and feel of the time period in which the story is placed.
For you
Hellboy fans out there theses are exciting times because Hellboy is about to go
into production for a whole new movie.
There’s never
been a better time to start reading Hellboy.
