Many, many years ago when I was a young man I picked up the novel Dune by author Frank Herbert.

It literally was unlike any science fiction novel I had read up to that point-and I had read a lot.

I was immediately captivated by Dune, it’s setting, characters and story line. Sequels came out and I read most of them.

But, have you ever asked yourself, “What was Dune like before the timeline first established by the books?”

Talk about a dysfunctional family!

Family patriarch Frank Gallagher is not what you would call a stellar example of fatherhood.

Having sired six children, all living at home, Frank spends most times at the local bar, passed out on the floor and spending what little money he makes.

His kids are left to fend for themselves. Fortunately his kids are smart, industrious and independent-maybe a little too independent. Unfortunately most are completely lost when it comes to social interactions and taking personal responsibility.

There’s an old saying in show business, “Acting is easy, comedy is hard.”

It’s says a lot about a family when two of its siblings are top-rate comedians.

Brothers Shawn and Marlon Wayans have a knack for comedy and it shines through in their TV series The Wayans Bros.

In the series they play two brothers (surprise) who are polar opposites. Marlon is all business and mostly serious. 

Shawn has a knack for getting in trouble, coming up with hair brain ideas and is always looking for any get-rich-quick opportunity.

Shawn is a delivery man and Mayan works for their dad at Pop’s Joint diner  in New York City.

Between the two brothers and their shenanigans, constant tit-for-tat and conflicting outlooks on life they keep their dad in a constant state of confusion.

And yet, they all love each other, stand by each other and are one big (if slightly off-kilter) family.

Get ready for plenty fast taking banter, outrageous physical comedy and enough energy to run a small town.

Galaxy Quest

The best Star Trek film ever made?! Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and other stellar movie stars combine their considerable talents to deliver a hilarious Star Trek parody.

When a troupe of has-been TV actors are recruited by an alien race to save their people things do not go well.

It seems the aliens mistook the actors’ as real people aboard a spaceship as seen on their old TV show.  The aliens believe the fictional captain and his crew are true heroes-not actors.

Going along with the charade the fake crew and captain grow fond of their alien guests and feel real sympathy for their plight.

Despite their fear the crew pulls together and faces off against the aliens’ deadly foe.

What makes the film so endearing is while it pokes fun at Star Trek and its fandom it also shows a great deal of respect.

Characters act as if they are actors placed in a very real situation.

Star Trek references include warp drive, transporters, phasers and all the other accoutrements associated with the original Star Trek TV series.

There's the stalwart captain, the cool alien, the young genius ensign, the engineer, the communication officer, even the unnamed crew member that is destined to die.

It’s all played very tongue-in-cheek and for laughs.  It is never vicious to or disrespectful of Star Trek whether it’s the original TV series or The Next Generation.

Even the spaceship when viewed at a certain angle looks like the U.S.S. Enterprise.

There’s plenty of action, humor, touching moments and drama.  The special effect are topnotch, as are the sets, practical effects, music score and the actors and actresses are perfectly cast.

Gremlins

Whatever you do don’t feed him after midnight or get him wet!

When an inventor comes across and old Chinese curio shop he discovers a small furry creature called a Gremlin.  The shop owner refuses to sell the Gremlin called Gizmo but his grandson insists.

The inventor takes Gizmo home with strict instructions to keep him out of sunshine, which would kill him, not to feed him after midnight and never, ever get him wet.

Of course Gizmo gets wet and is fed after midnight resulting in a whole new batch of evil Gremlins being born.  Chaos ensues.

Joe Dante directed the film that went on to spawn a sequel.

The movie is one of only a few films that successfully combines humor with horror.  While the Mowgli (Gremlins) (as in the case of Gismo) are cute and cuddly, their offspring are anything but.  Add offspring from offspring and you have some of the most horrifying and frightening killer creatures imaginable.

Gremlins proved so popular that it achieved cult status.  Vast amount of Gremlins merchandise was produced and almost countless movie knockoffs.

I’ve always been partial to the classic Warner Bros./Discovery’s Looney Tunes cartoons. While I enjoyed the Disney, Walter Lantz and other studios animated shorts the Looney Tunes characters and cartoons always delivered with offbeat humor, outrageous situations and irreverent content.

They were the rebels of their day. Nothing was sacred from the Opera, hunting, UFO’s, rural and suburban folks and norms and breaking the 4^th wall where the characters were very much aware that they were cartoons. Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck were especially adept at taking the audience along for the ride.

The collection contains work by legendary animation directors/animators/giants such as Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, Fritz Freleng and others.

Included are fan favorites, some rare, seldom seen and almost forgotten shorts.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Michael Keaton returns as the ghost with most, the poltergeist of vice and the ghoul who is cool.

In the sequel to the hilarious and inventive first film Beetlejuice. 

Lydia Deetz, the almost wife of Beetlejuice, must rescue her daughter who has been tricked by a murderous ghost to take his place in the afterlife so he can live again.

The Terminator

A cybernetic killing machine-relentless, ruthless, unemotional and programmed to eliminate humans.

From Warner Bros./Discovery comes the MGM classic, cyborg-killer movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the the T-800 cyborg with a deadly mission: to kill Sarah Conner, the future mother of John Connor who would lead the rebellion against the Terminators and shut down the world-wide threat of the sentient Skynet computer system.

Director James Cameron gained a name for himself with The Terminator movie and it catapulted Arnold to super-star status.

Both Arnold and Cameron redefined what a science fiction/horror film was all about.

The movie went on to spawn five sequels, a TV series, animated features, video games and an entire merchandising empire.

While many of the visual special effects are a little dated by today’s standards the movie still stands up today with its frantic pace, strong characters, well-developed script, stellar direction and acting and haunting soundtrack.

Who can forget Arnold’s icy stare as The Terminator, his massive presence and menacing power? Linda Hamilton as Sarah Conner starts out as a typical weak and helpless female and evolves into one of the Silver Screen’s most powerful female characters and the climatic screen between Sarah and The Terminator still sends chills running up my spin.

First Men In the Moon

Victorians land on the moon during the 19th Century.  An eccentric scientist invents an anti-gravity formula called corbonite that he uses to coat his bathysphere spaceship to travel to the moon.

With the help of a neighbor who is a writer and his girlfriend the trio find themselves rocketing toward the moon in the makeshift spacecraft.

Landing (more like a controlled crash) the trio of humans setout to explore the Moon.  With only two spacesuits available the men venture outside while the woman stays inside the homemade space capsule.

The men discover a huge geometric dome and signs of life.  They decide to explore.

I don’t know about you but I love science fiction films from the 1960s and H.G. Wells’ First Men In The Moon is one of the best.

With its stellar cast, clever Victorian sets and costumes, exciting soundtrack and clever script combined with its visual and practical effects it is a classic film.

The twist ending is a real showstopper and the drama, action and comedy all combine to make a great film.

The movie can be found on DVD from Columbia Pictures and includes lots of cool extras such as trailers, featurettes, a photo gallery and more.

Beetlejuice

The poltergeist to beat all poltergeists. Director and writer Tim Burton, fresh off his success with Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, tackled the spirit world.

He contracted Michael Keaton to play the title character Beetlejuice (in the film by the same name) the maniacal, madman and manipulative poltergeist.

Alex Baldwin and Geena Davis starred as a young married couple who died and haunted their old home.

Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice was amazing.  His frenetic, frantic, feisty and fantastic take on the ghostly wise guy was spot on.

Things get out of hand when a new family moved in and tried to redecorate the deceased couple’s house.  The whacked out ‘artiste’ mom, the wimpy dad, the over the top decorator and the Goth daughter were all in for a surprise.

Amazingly the daughter could see the ghostly couple and was not afraid of them.  In fact, she was sympathetic to their plight and agreed to help them run out her family.

After all else failed the couple and the girl had no choice but to hire Beetlejuice to help them.  The only problem was, there was a catch-he wanted to run the show and marry the young Goth girl.

Then things got real interesting.

What a fun movie!  I love the wackiness of the premise, the bizarre sets, the characters, the ingenious creatures and especially Beetlejuice as portrayed by actor Michael Keaton.

Beetlejuice is available on DVD from Warner Bros./Discovery.  The 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition also has a lot of fun extras.

Captain Planet And The Planeteers

The environment, global climate change, depletion of natural resources, pollution and saving the planet are in the news almost everyday.

Separate camps of global climate change advocates and naysayers bump heads constantly.

Advocates of climate change want changes, big changes, on how we generate energy, renew natural resources and curtailing the effects mankind’s environment negligence has had on the environment.

But, did you know that none of this is new? Maybe not on the scale we see it nowadays, but-environmental concerns have dated back for decades.

Back in 1990 a new kids’ animated TV show emphasized responsible environmental practices and confronted what many believed were the main culprits of such pollution and wasters and spoilers of natural resources.

The West Wing The Complete Series

In this time of Presidential election turmoil and nasty politics it seems only appropriate Warner Bros./Discovery has released the Blu-ray collection of The West Wing The Complete series.

All 156 episodes come on 28 discs along with a plethora of special features such as commentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, unaired scenes, gag reels and much, much more.

Celebrate the 25^th Anniversary of the 26 Emmy Award winning series that is considered one of the best dramatic TV series ever aired.

Intelligent writing, an incredible cast including Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Alan Alda and other stellar actors and actresses, the series delved into the politics, practices, intrigue, wheeling and dealing and corruption that permeate The White House and Presidency as well as politics in general.

The show covered two Presidential terms and highlighted the struggles of the President, his family, staff, political rivals and world events.

Hook

Robin Williams as Peter Pan!? 

 

Back in the early 1990s producer and director Steven Spielberg decided to direct a new film about Peter Pan called Hook for Sony Pictures.  

Who better to play Peter Pan as a middle age man than Robin Williams?

Dustin Hoffman also stars as Captain Hook and Bob Hoskins as his head henchman Mr. Smee and Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell. 

The story follows Peter as he is grown up and has children of his own.

When he and his wife come home for a night out they discover ripped and torn walls and a message from Captain Hook for a final confrontation with Peter.  Confused Peter discovers that Grandma Wendy (who lives with them) was the original Wendy and that Peter married her granddaughter. 

She tries to get Peter to remember who he is. Desperate to find his kids Peter reluctantly follows Tinker Bell, who has come to take him back to Never, Never Land.

Once there he discover that his kids are held captive by Captain Hook.  Peter’s son takes a liking to Hook and almost forgets his father.  Pan’s daughter never loses her faith in her father.

When Peter arrives he does not recognize any of The Lost Boys .  Slowly as time passes and the danger to his kids intensifies Peter remembers and once more dons his characteristic Peter Pan outfit, rediscovers that he can fly, rallies The Lost Boys and confronts Hook.

Both Williams and Hoffman turn in fabulous performances with Maggie Smith, Bob Hoskins and Julia Roberts not far behind.

The movie didn’t do too well at the box office and that’s a shame because it was good family entertainment.

The sets were incredible, as were the special effects.

At the end of the film with Hook defeated and Peter Pan back home with his family there is a wonderful touching scene of the one Lost Boy who came to with the real world with Peter the first time.  

Now an old man, the Lost Boy discovers something he had lost and found again and with a sprinkle of magic fairy dust off he goes to Never, Never Land.

As the old man leaves the old Wendy looks at Peter and says that his adventures are over.

Peter holds his family and says, “Oh, no. To live... to live would be an awfully big adventure.”

Hook is a feel good movie about family, friendship and love.

The War Of The Worlds

Martians invade the earth!  

Released in the 1953 The War Of The Worlds film starring Gene Barry, adapted the H.G. Well novel to a movie set in then modern times.

I still remember the sight of the floating Martian war machines and the chilling visage of an actual Martian.  Scary stuff for a kid.

It’s the early 1950s.  One evening a large light flashes across the horizon.  When it lands all he power in a nearby small town ceases.

A young scientist is vesting the town and goes to investigate.  A horrified crowd gathers the ground shakes around the mysterious metal object that fell from the sky.  A circular hatch opens and a large mechanical eye emerges and starts shooting deadly rays.

So begins the War Of The Worlds as the world is besieged by space faring objects that crash into the earth-all concealing massive flying killing machines (it was too expensive and difficult to make them three-legged walkers at the time) from Mars.

The world collapses into chaos and all seems lost.  Suddenly the mighty killing machines start falling all around the world.

The Martians are dying, succumbing to the various germs and viruses in earth’s atmosphere that human beings have an immunity to-but not the Martians.

For the time War Of The Worlds from Paramount Pictures a visual blockbuster, with incredible special effects, amazing sets and physical effects and an all0-star cast.

Oh sure, the clothing, cars, towns and everything else is dated (it was the early 1950s) but here is something still thrilling about the film despite its age.

It’s a timeless tale brought to the Silver Screen a number of times, broadcast on radio, seen on TV and adapted to comic books, spawning toys and other merchandise.
