Ultraverse

In the early 1990s both Marvel and DC Comics had some serious competition on their hands. Other publishers entered the market and threatened to take away their readership.

One such company, Malibu Comics, had a huge plethora of characters and the creators and production expertise to take up the challenge.

When the comic book speculation glut hit and then collapsed many new comic book publishers were stuck with huge inventories and bills. Most went out of business.

Malibu Comics held on just long enough to be bought by Marvel Comics-not for its characters but for its color technology and location on the West Coast.

This happened in the early 1990s and none of the Malibu characters have been seen since. Skybox put out a 115 Card set of Malibu character Ultraverse Trading Cards that also included two Ultra Cards.

It came in its own little box colorfully decorated with Malibu characters on both sides.

It’s too bad Malibu folded because it had an impressive roster of characters, good stories, great art and superb coloring.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine Series Premiere Trading Cards

When Star Trek Deep Space Nine came out it changed the face of Star Trek forever.

Previously in the earlier Trek TV series the future was always pictured as optimistic.

Oh sure, there a few conflicts but all-in-all The Federation planets lived n peace and there was no poverty or want.

Not so, with Deep Space Nine. There was always a crisis or danger from hostile aliens.

The station was run down and repairs had to be made almost on a daily basis. The constant threat of takeovers or troubles from the nearby region of space that opened to other quadrants were constant themes.

Crew members didn’t always get along and neither did the command staff being it was comprised of different races.

Dirt and grime and poverty and crime painted a different picture of this Federation outpost.

In 1993 Skybox Trading Cards released 98 card Star Trek Deep Space Nine Series Premiere Trading Cards set featuring images from the series: characters, ships, locations, etc.

All were printed on heavy-coated paper stock with gloss photos.

On the back of the cards was information about the images on their fronts.

Also a Certification Of Limited Edition, a Comment and Special Cards were included.

The cards came packaged in a small box with two pieces of Styrofoam inside to keep the cards protected.

It’s a nice set of cards of which I still have.

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles Trading Cards

Indiana Jones As A kid And A Teenager!?

Waaaay back in the early 1990s George Lucas created a TV series starring Indian Jones as a young boy and teenager.

Episodes followed young Indy as he traveled with his father and mother (along with his nanny) around the world, grew to young manhood, entered the military and began his archeologist career.

The series gave George Lucas the opportunity to test new computer technology and filming techniques that would suit his needs when he released the enhanced and rejuvenated original Star Wars Trilogy using the techniques he learned with Young Indy.

The show was green lit because of the success of the Indiana Jones film The Last Crusade a few years earlier.  Fans were begging from more Indy stories and this was a way to satisfy their wants.

It also gave George the chance to delve to incorporate important historical events into the series and hopefully teach young viewers.

Each episode began with Old Indy, having lost one eye and using a cane, recalling his early adventures to youngsters, strangers or whoever would listen willingly or unwillingly. Unfortunately on the released DVD collection the Old Indy sequences are absent.

The episodes would then continue with either Indy as a young child or as a teenager or young man.  Sean Flannery starred as Indiana Jones.

Pro Set Trading Cards created a set of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles Trading Cards with 36 Packs per Box, 10 Cards per Pack and including 3-D Cards and Viewers in every Pack.  114 Cards make up the Set.

The Cards came in a custom Young Indiana Jones Box with images and logo from the series on its cover.

Each Pack has similar images.

All the Cards are printed on heavy-coated paper stock making them really pop!

In addition the 3-D Cards are printed on matte paper and as an extra added bonus special folded Treasure Cards contains illustrations of many of the articfacts and maps Indy encountered on his adventures are also included.

For fans of the Indiana Jones franchise will discover that the Cards make for a fine visual library of some of Indy’s early adventures that helped make him the man he was.

Full color photos from the series’ entire episodes highlight the key events in each.

I am blessed in that I have one full box unopened and one opened.

Guardhouse Sentry Premium Toploader 3" x 4"

Trading cards are big business.  Sports or non-sports trading cards collectors take great pride in their collections and are very protective of their rare and valuable cards.

It’s important to have the proper protection for such cards.

That’s why Transline Supply Company has created its Guardhouse Sentry Premium Toploader 3" x 4" card sleeves.

Here's the link:
https://www.guardhouseholders.com/guardhouse-un-sentry-3x4-premium-toploader-20pt-cards-66 8397.aspx

Its durable and clear toploader sleeves make protection for trading cards safe and secure.

With their easy load tops with a slight lip in the back the toploader sleeves make sliding cards in and out easy and trouble free-no bumped edges or misalignments.

The 25 Pack comes in a plastic bag with an easy to open and close flap.

Card specs are:

OD: 102.7 x 76.6 mm
Thickness: Back 0.5mm/Front 0.4mm
Opening for 20 pt cards
Ultra-clear

While I am not a sports card collector I do have a rather large collection of autographed, special and rare non-sports cards.  Most are stored in plastic card boxes and sleeve pages.  I plan on taking my most valuable cards and placing them in the Sentry Premium Toploaders.

With their high quality construction, semi-flexible and easy to insert card design I’ll feel much more secure as to the safety and preservation of my prized cards.

Batman Movie Cards

This is the set of Trading Cards that got me back into the non-sports Trading Cards hobby.

In 1989 director Tim Burton, inspired by Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns mini-series, wrote and directed the first Batman movie starring Michael Keaton.

When the movie came out Topps Trading Cards released a Limited Edition Set of Batman Movie Trading Cards.

They came in a special flip lid Box decorated with photos and production art from the film.

Here’s where it gets interesting.  One hundred and thirty Cards make up the Base Set.

On the Box it states that 22 additional Stickers are included.

Obviously Topps changed the contents because 22 Puzzle Cards were included, not Stickers.

There is also 11 movie production Art Cards in the set.

I don’t know the reason for the switch from Stickers to Puzzle Cards-perhaps there was trouble with the Stickers themselves.

Regardless, the Cards are printed on gloss paper and feature some cool images and the Box is equally cool.

Legends of Marvel Series 3

Marvel Comics have taken over the universe.  Marvel comic books, novels, magazines, merchandise, TV shows and movies are everywhere.

Suddenly trading cards are gaining popularity-especially Marvel trading cards.

Back in 2012 Rittenhouse Archives (Sci-fi Hobby) released a special set of Legends of Marvel Series 3 trading cards.

The sets consisted of 25 cards and starred The Hulk, Storm and Moon Knight.

All feature art of the characters on both sides as drawn by various artists.

Watch for this set to escalate in value as the trading card craze grows.

Star Trek The Next Generation Collector Cards Behind The Scenes

Have you ever wondered what goes behind the scenes of making a popular science fiction TV show like Star Trek: The Next Generation?

I don’t know about you but whenever I get a DVD set about a TV show or a movie Blu-ray or DVD I love watching the featurettes and special.

Watching a TV show of movie is one thing.  Knowing how they made it is another.

In Skybox’s Star Trek: The Next Generation Collector Cards Behind The Scenes Set of Cards Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series is examined behind the cameras.

Cards examine set designs, costumes, music scores, special effects, scripts, pre and post production and so much more.

Learn what it takes to turn out a weekly sci-fi TV series.  It requires the work of dozens of professionals, serious spanning and with a constant eye on the budget.

The Set of Cards was limited to 50,000.  I received Set number 26,346.

Magnum P.I. Trading Cards

It’s hard to believe that the original Magnum PI TV show went off the air in 1988 after eight successful seasons.

It’s even harder to believe that Tom Selleck, who played Magnum, is in his mid-70s, Larry Manetti who played Rick is also in his 70s, Roger Mosely as T.C. is in his mid-80s and that John Hillerman, who played Jonathan Higgins III, died in 2017 at 84 years old.

Magnum P.I. was a mainstay in the 1980s for my wife and I.  Every Thursday night at 8 PM we’d curl up on the couch to watch Magnum and his pals solve crimes on CBS.

Eight color cards come per pack along with a stick of bubblegum in the Donruss Magnum P.I. Trading Card series.  Sixty-six cards make up the set.

What fun looking over the photos taken from the show.  I miss the original series-especially all of the characters.  Like myself they have all grown old.

It saddens me to see some of my favorite actors grow old or die.  It makes me recognize my own mortality.

I do have a hope.  When I die I know I’ll go to heaven to be with my savior Jesus Christ.  Still, I’m in no hurry to die.

It’s difficult at times to see oneself aging.  Wrinkles form, hair turns gray or disappears, eyesight grows dim, hearing dulls and the body slowly succumbs to weakness, less mobility and more aches and pains.

When I was young I never thought of getting old.  Now that I am approaching my twilight years I wonder what time will do to me.  Will I contract Alzheimer's or Dementia, will I be bed bound or placed in a nursing home?

Who will go first, my wife or myself?  If she dies before me, how will I handle the grief?

Growing old is scary but its also an adventure where you never know what's around the next bend or what might happen.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to get melancholy.  It’s just that when I looked over my Magnum P.I. Trading Cards from Donruss I suddenly realized how long ago the show went off the air and how young I was when it aired.

Twenty-two of the cards have a made-up story about Magnum P.I. on their backs.  The balance of the cards have a section of a poster on their backs that when put together make a huge poster of Magnum.

I can’t express how much joy looking at these cards gives me.

It’s like looking at a part of my younger life and the great times my wife and I had in the 1980s when were in our late 20s and early 30s.  We were so young and had so much to look forward to.  We had our whole lives ahead of us.

Still, I wouldn’t change a thing.  We’ve been together for over 40 years, raised two great kids and are blessed to have two awesome grandkids.

Romans 8:39 - Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Lost In Space, The Twilight Zone and Twin Peaks

Talk about your nice after-Christmas presents!

Rittenhouse Archives/Sci-Fi Hobby recently sent me three new Trading Card Boxes to review.

It’s been awhile since I heard from Rittenhouse and I’m anxious to see what each series of Trading Card Sets have to offer.

All three series of Trading Cards Sets come 24 Packs per Box with two Autograph Cards per Box.

As with every Rittenhouse Archives/Sci-Fi Hobby Trading Card Sets the quality of the Cards is first-rate with high-gloss and heavy paper stock and brilliant color photos and art along with clever and highly collectible ’extras’.

Lost In Space Season One

I was a little late on arrival when the new Lost In Space TV series premiered on Netflix.  We did not have a Netflix account at the time.

However 20th Century Fox provided me the complete First Season on Blu-ray for review.  I binged watched it.

Before watching it I was a little skeptical.  A female Dr. Smith, a radically redesigned Robot and Jupiter 2 and a mixed family Robinson?  Where would the series lead me?

I need not have worried, the show far outdid my expectations.  I can hardly wait for Season Two.

RittenhouseArchives/Sci-Fi Hobby Trading Cards has created a great set of Lost In Space Trading Cards with scenes from the series, Behind-The-Scenes Secrets, Special Effects and much more.  Five Cards come per Pack.

Seventy-Two Cards make up the Base Set with six Plot Synopsis Cards for each episode with lots of randomly inserted Bonus Cards in each Box.

I was able to assemble a complete Base Set with Cards left over for almost complete a second Set.

When I was a kid I loved watching the original Twilight Zone TV series.  It scared the snot out of me and yet I watched it every week.

Without Rod Serling the new series seemed to fall flat.

I made complete Base Set with some extras left over.

Twin Peaks Archives

I have to admit I never watched Twin Peaks.  I had several friends who swore by it and never missed an episode.

If memory serves me correctly there was another TV show I watched that was on at the same time as Twin Peaks.  I never got around to watching the series.

Rittenhouse Archives/Sci-Fi Hobby knows the show and has produced a beautiful series of Trading Cards.
