Anna Valerious

Hugh Jackman may have been the star in the Van Helsing movie but without a strong female costar the movie would have been too ponderous and dark.

Kate Beckinsale played Anna Valerious the last descendant of the family that fought the Lord of Darkness: Dracula.

No damsel in distress, Anna could fight with the best of them.  Brave, adept at swordplay and determined Anna made the perfect female compatriot for Van Helsing.

The 12-inch fully articulated figure from Sideshow Collectibles recreates the raven hair beauty in all her finery.

The stunning figure comes packaged in Sideshow’s standard flip lid box with photos of the figure and actress on all sides and a brief description of the movie and cast list on the inside flip lid.

A sheet of tissue paper protects the figure and accessories behind a clear plastic panel.

Both the figure and accessories are secured in a form fitting, clear plastic cocoon and plastic/wire ties under a clear plastic panel for viewing and protection.

Accessories include a gold handle dagger, a gold handle and pommel two-edged sword, a twin sword and dagger scabbard with silver buckle belt and a special Van Helsing circular base and support wire for posing the figure.

The Anna figure’s face features striking blue eyes, a slightly dark complexion, a small nose, pursed red lip and a high forehead and cheekbones all framed by a full head of auburn hair that looks real.

She has a long slender neck, a nice athletic figure and small propositioned hands for holding the weapons.

The figure wears a white blouse with no collar decorated in red thread and tied with a large open bow with frilly sleeves that peek through her vest at the wrists.

She wears a short vest open at the chest with large open slit sleeves, a black leather girdle with open lattice work, tight fitting pants and black middle thigh boots with silver side buckles.

Overall it is a very attractive figure with smooth articulation.  The clothing does not bind as the figure moves, despite its tight fit.

It’s a nicely crafted figure that looks remarkably like the actress who played Anna.

Color application is smooth, clean and has no rough edges.  The clothing is delicately assembled with frills, lattices with clever attachment in scale and perfectly fitted to the figure.

Accessories are in scale, look completely functional and historically accurate.

Crisis On Infinite Earths #12

This is the big one!  This is where the DC Universe was permanently altered and condensed for continuity’s sake and to aid new DC Comics’ readers in understanding what the DC Universe was all about.

It is the culmination of the massive 12-part maxi-series by Marv Wolfman and George Perez that reinvented, reinvigorated, relaunched and revitalized the entire DC Comics Universe.  It’s a biggie folks!

Artist George Perez (with asset from Jerry Ordway) pulls out all the stops in one of the most ambitious hero and villain jam-packed culmination of a maxi-series ever devised in Crisis On Infinite Earths #12.

Over the series billions of people died, worlds were destroyed, the Flash and Supergirl gave their lives as did so many heroes (and villains) from all the alternate earths and universes.

In the final issue the heroes face off against the Anti-Monitor in his own Anti-Matter Universe.

Harbinger appears to declare the final conflict just as the Anti-Monitor’s shadow creatures attack.  As the universe collapses both hero and villain unite to take down the Anti-Monitor.

Finally the Golden Age Superman delivers the final blow.  Changes ripple throughout the DC Universe as heroes are reborn, the past and future are altered and the DC Universe is condensed into one world.

Ironically only a few years later the DC Universe would need another cleansing.and another...and another...until the alternate earths all returned.and then some.

The DC Universe would survive several Crises, a new 52, a Rebirth and finally settle into what it is today.

The Crisis On Infinite Earths maxi-series is a ’must-have’ for any DC Comics or comic book fan.   It is one of the most important events that has ever taken place in the DC Universe and allowed the DC to evolve over the years since its completion.

Why Comic Books?

I began reading comic books when I was five years old.  Not long afterwards I began collecting them.

At first I read only Harvey, Dell, Whitman and Archie comic books but eventually shifted over to DC Comics and then to Marvel Comics.

I also read and collected Warren, Tower and other small publishers books and as I grew older I bought and read underground comic books and small independent titles.

By the time I was about seven years old all of my three older brothers had moved out leaving only my invalid mother and myself.

From that point on I was pretty much an only child.  I was fat, socially awkward, unschooled in how to interact with others comfortably and I loved to draw, read and I possessed a curious mind.

To put it in more succinct terms: I was a geek.

As the years progressed I read and collected more and more comic books content to live in my imaginary worlds.  Comic books were a refuge, somewhere where I felt I was a part of a very special club.

Collecting comic books was, and is, a very personal thing to me.  Oh sure, I love to share my hobby when asked, but I mostly I keep my love of comic books to myself.

I very seldom attend conventions as I’m not big on crowds and quite frankly the over hyping and commercialism of the hobby sickens me--and the prices!

I do like many of the superhero movies and TV shows and especially collectible action figures-both large and small.

I’m retired and on a fixed income.  I cannot afford to buy expensive back issues and I stopped buying new comic books when I retired for two reasons: they are two expensive and there is too much social relativism and political bias in many of the titles.  Political correctness and Wok-ism have almost destroyed the hobby.

While I don’t disparage or discourage anyone from buying new comic books or attending conventions (it’s necessary for the hobby to continue) I am put off by the crass commercialism and emphasis on how much comic books are worth.

To me grading and slabbing comic books is degradating the hobby for the average collector-who cannot afford such high prices.  The market has swung in favor of the speculators.  It’s taken much of the allure out of collecting.

I’m fortunate in that since I’ve been a collector for several decades that I have many of the ‘hot’ back issue comics collectors clamor for.

In my blog I review many of the older back issues adding in a few personal observations.  There are a lot of issues that are ignored because they are not on the ‘hot’ list.

My hope is, one day, to come across a large cache of old Silver and Bronze Age comic books so that I can write even more retro reviews.

As my blog attests I love to write review-of all sorts.  I’ve been blessed that I can do so.

But more important than that is that I am able to slip in a few Bible scriptures and my personal testimony now and again as to the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

All the comic books or stuff in the world will not save you-neither will good works.  It is the grace of God that saves, not of works, lest any man should boost.

It’s so simple-ask God to forgive you and to save you and he will.  All it takes is faith and trust-two things lacking in today’s world.  God does all the work-Christ died on the cross to save humanity-don’t let his sacrifice be in vain.

St. John 3: 16

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Himshould not perish, but have everlasting life.

DC Super-Stars Presents The Teen Titans #1 (11, 24)

During the mid-1970s DC Comics enlarged its catalog of comic books.  Known as the DC Explosion, the publisher doubled its monthly number of comic book titles.

One such title: DC Super-Stars, reprinted many classic DC comic book titles: The Teen Titans #1 (11, 24) was one such comic book.

The first issue reprinted two classic Teen Titans tales: one from issue #11 and one from issue # 24.  It also included a character gallery of the Teen Titans.

As Silver and Bronze Age comic books continue to rise in value more and more collectors are seeking out reprint issues.

Even these issues are rising in price but being reprints they usually only rise in value a fraction of what their first print cousins do,

For a nostalgic, hip trip down Memory Lane pick up a copy of DC Super-Stars Presents The Teen Titans #1 that reprints some early Silver Age adventures of the original Teen Titans with art by Nick Cardy and Gil Kane with scripts by Bob Haney.

Sure they’re corny, ripe with aged slang and somewhat silly but the original tales are still a lot of fun to read.

Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV) “But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

2022 Wish List Review Items Expansion

As much as I love reviewing toys, comic books, books and magazines (along with a few other miscellaneous items) I really want to expand my review list for 2022.

That may sound a bit odd, but if you’ve been following my blog for any amount of time you’ve noticed that I included ‘Consumers’ in the name of my blog: Boyce McClain’s Consumers’ and Collectors’ Corner.

I did this so that I might review items outside of the collectors market.

For 2022 I wish to expand my reviews to include all sorts of merchandise.

While I’m handy around the house, in the garage and yard I’m hardly an expert when it comes to cars, woodworking, home repairs, cooking and general house, car and yard projects and repairs.

That’s why I want to expand my reviews.

I believe there is an audience out there that struggles with many of the projects that I do.

So, I’d like to expand my reviews to include power tools, kitchen power utensils, yard power tools, camping equipment and accessories, electronics of all sorts, computers and peripherals-such as storage and power backups, gadgets, knives and cutting tools, art supplies and packaging and storage containers.

I’d like to review any and everything-I’m curious and anxious to share what I learn.

Besides the items listed above I want to review even more physical books, comic books and magazines along with more toys (especially 12-inch and high-end figures, vinyls and diecast), model kits, trading cards, Anime, Manga, sports memorabilia, games (board, card, miniatures and video), music and other collectibles.

I know it’s a big wish list.  I like to dream big.  If you’re reading this and you work for any company or manufacturer that wishes to have their merchandise reviewed please send samples my way.

I promise to do thorough reviews, include hyperlinks and give credit where credit is due.

Items can be sent to:

Boyce McClain’s Consumers’ and Collectors’ Corner
1668 Whitman Street
Jacksonville, FL 32210

My email is: bamcomics@juno.com

My other goals for 2022 are to attend more conventions (toy, game, comic books, etc.), offer giveaways and obtain some old comic books and toys so I can write some retro reviews.

I also want to expand my outreach and increase my audience, get more reader feedback and explore new ways to promote my site and reviews.

Wish me luck!

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Ghostbusters!
If there's something strange
In your neighborhood
Who you gonna call?
Ghostbusters!
If there's something weird
And it don't look good
Who you gonna call?
Ghostbusters!
I ain't 'fraid of no ghost
I ain't 'fraid of no ghost...

If you’re a big fan of movies these lyrics look familiar.

Back in 1984 when the first Ghostbusters movie came out it was a huge success. Combining comedy with the supernatural proved to be a big hit with moviegoers, so much so that a sequel was released in 1989.

Ghostbusters became an America icon and classic and even today Ghostbusters merchandise sells big.  So it seems only logical that a new Ghostbusters movie would be produced completing the trilogy.

Unfortunately in 2017 a Ghostbusters movie was released with an all female cast.  While it wasn't a bad movie it failed to capture the look and feel of the original Ghostbusters films.

Not so with Ghostbusters: Afterlife.  The new movie combines a new storyline and characters while paying homage to the original films-even so far as to bring back the surviving original cast.

It’s funny, scary, nostalgic and carries on the true ‘spirit’ of the original films.

Titan Books and author Ozzy Inguanzo have recently released a new Ghostbusters: Afterlife book about the art and making of the movie.

Inside readers will learn what inspired the director (and writer) (the son of the original Ghostbusters director) to take on such a massive and beloved property.

Tag along as the book examines the early concept of the film including drawings, full color conceptual paintings, set designs, equipment, costumes, locations, sets and the technical magic required to make the film.

Accompanying the art and photos is detailed text about the whole process, production staff and actor commentaries and in-depth analysis about how the effects, sets and look of the movie were achieved.

The oversize hardback book with its iconic image of Exto-1 on its dust jacket is filled with art, photos, schematics, storyboards, images of creatures and ghosts and more ectoplasm goodies.

It’s an absolutely fascinating and engrossing book about of the making a film that is sure to be a classic and to spawn more sequels.

I spend hours pouring over its images and reading its text.  It brings back so many wonderful memories of the old films while still providing enjoyment with the new modern tribute and sequel.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV) “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Captain Victory #3

Jack Kirby had knocked around comic books for over 50 years.  He revolutionized DC Comics and Marvel Comics but in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s his style was considered old and irrelevant.

Kirby was determined to prove he still had what it took.  He contracted with Pacific Comics and premiered a new title: Captain Victory And His Galactic Rangers.

At first much or the Kirby magic remained but as the series continued it became evident that the old master was starting to slow down and loose much of his edge.

While it is evident he still had a respectable imagination it seemed his ideas were a bit dated and redundant.

His dialogue was more stilted and his art (while competent) had lost much of its detail and luster.

It was almost as if Jack’s art had become so stylized that it had become a parody of itself.

Jack’s page layouts and minimal character drawings were becoming increasingly simpler.

If you take the time to examine his art you can spot sporadically the old Jack with his vivid imagination and knack for drawing impressive scenes.

Still, as the title progressed his art became much more minimal and difficult to decipher.

Jack’s art would continue to degrade as he grew older until it reached the point it was little more than bold lines and unrealistic.

Sadly just a few short years later Jack would pass away.  He would never see his Marvel and DC Comics creations make it to the Silver Screen and receive the adoration and credit he deserved

Since his death his family has begun to profit from his legacy and a whole new generation of comic book readers and collectors have discovered his art.

Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV) “A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones.”

Judge Dredd #3

Superstar penciller Brian Bolland got his start on the Judge Dredd comic book strip. In issue #3 in the Judge Dredd comic book series, from Eagle Comics, met his ultimate emesis in the ghostly, ghastly and horrific Judge Death.

In my opinion Judge Death is one of the most horrific villains ever conceived.  Brian Bolland drew the Judge as a desiccated green skinned skeletal figure wearing a ghastly imitation of Judge Dredd’s uniform.

Bolland poured all his heart and soul into the creation of Judge Death and his companion Judges and it shows with their incredible figures and uniforms.

Once human, Judge Death is an animated corpse from Deadworld that escaped his world/dimension and traveled to Mega-City One.

Once there he was joined by his fellow Dark Judges.  They proceed to mete out the ultimate judgment-the irradiation of all life.

Only the reviving of Judge Anderson and her psychic abilities stop the Judges when they are judged of their own crimes.

Issue #3 is a grim and gritty tale and really showcased Brian Bolland’s art.

John Wagner provided the chilling script and Eagle Comics brought the tale to America back in 1984,

Proverbs 14:12 (NKJV) “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”

Angel

David Boreanaz starred as Angel, the vampire with a conscience and Buffy’s love interest in the hit series Buffy The Vampire Slayer and later in his own TV series.

Like all of the Sideshow Collectibles figures the Angel figure comes in a standard box with a front panel that opens to reveal the figure within.

A clear plastic panel covers the figure which is held in place by a form-fitted plastic cocoon and plastic coated wires.

Photos and informational text cover the front, back, sides and inside the front cover flap.

The resemblance to actor David Boreanaz is remarkable. The 12-inch fully articulated figures comes with preset hands for holding the various items that come with the figure.

These include three vials of holy water and a long sword with a golden pommel, blood guard and grip.  A circular Buffy base and wire stand is also included.

The facial features on the figure are painted in subtle variated shades and hues to give the features a more natural look.

The square jaw, straight nose, deep mournful eyes and thin lips match the Angel character.

The figure comes dressed in all black.  Clothing is small stitched, actual fabric and the creases, folds and fit match their larger counterparts.

He wears a black shirt, pants, shoes and a four-button trench coat with two slit pockets.

All the clothing is stitched to scale using real cloth. The clothing move smoothly over the figure with no bunching or unrealistic folds or creases.

Angel wears a gold ring on his left and right hand middle fingers.

Toys From Occupied Japan, Collecting The Space Race and Toy Cars

After Japan lost World War II to the United States, the U.S. sent troops to occupy Japan as it rebuilt.  In fact, the U.S. still has troops in Japan.

During the height of the occupation Japan went through a huge change, especially when it came to manufacturing.

Japan manufacturers soon caught on that American troops bought merchandise and that a huge consumer market was available in the United States.

With its burgeoning industry and cheap labor Japan began producing cheap consumer goods for the American market.

Among this merchandise were toys of all types from tinplate to electric, plush and more-specifically targeted at American consumers.

In Toys From Occupied Japan, written by Anthony R. Maresella and published by Schiffer Publishing, said toys are examined.

Along with a price guide the book presents page after page of full color photos of toys of every type along with the label names and sizes.

In Collecting The Space Race, by Stuart Schneider, America’s fascination with the space program is examined.

Products such as toys, appliances, model kits, photos, art and just about every conceivable type of merchandise featuring the space race are spotlighted along with lots of informational and historical text and a price guide.

Toy Cars Of Japan and Hong Kong, by
Andrew G Ralston, delves in to the fascinating world of diecast and tin collectible toys.

From the family sedan to more exotic cars such as the TV Batmobile the book breaks the collectibles down by year, manufacturer, type of car (such as battery powered and friction) and includes a price guide, a gallery of full color photos and loads of information.

The New Adventures Of Superboy #50

Join DC Comics as it celebrates the 50th issue of The New Adventures Of Superboy that combines a new tale with a classic tale.

I never was a big fan of Superboy.  I did like his adventures when he teamed up with The Legion Of Superheroes though.  Fortunately this issue has the Legion which makes the story enjoyable in a nostalgic sort of way.

A quite recap: The future: a man steals the Dial H For Hero dial.  He uses it to change to a super human to commit crimes.  Chameleon Boy attempts to stop him.  The thief teleports into the past to Smallville where Superboy resides.

The thief frees Lex Luthor from jail. They hatch a plan to take down Superboy and in return Lex Luthor promises to invent a time machine to take the thief back to his own time.

The Legion Of Superheroes follows the thief back in time.  They and Superboy (along with Krypto) battle the thief and defeat both he and Lex Luthor.

Pretty cool huh?

What makes this issue especially special is that the then Legion artist Keith Giffen draws part of the issue while Silver Age Superboy artist Kurt Schafffenbruger draws the majority of the book.

What better way to celebrate the 50th issue of The New Adventures Of Superboy?  Granted it’s not a milestone issue or a ’hot’ comic.  It’s just good old comic book fun and an enjoyable read.  What more can you ask for?

Philippians 4:4 (KJV) “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.”

Toys-Banks, Tinplate Toys and Baby Boomer Toys and Collectibles

I’m a Baby Boomer.  I was born in 1953 and I am what is considered a child of the war years when Americans came home from the war and proceeded to start families.

In Baby Boomers Toys and Collectible Second Edition, by Carol Turpen and published by Schiffer Publishing, the toys and collectibles I remember as a kid are spotlighted.

Model kits, battery toys, spaceships, ray guns, robots, TV tie-ins, games, wind-ups and so much more fill the color photo packed pages along with information and an updated price guide.

Tinplate Toys From Schuco, Bing, And Other Companies, by Jurgen Franzke and published by Schiffer, has been reprinted as a brand new second edition.

Most of the toys were produced in Nuremberg Germany and cover a large selection of toy types from friction toys to diecast.

This book offers a unique look at a toy source often overlooked.

Full color photos along with prices, toy specs and historical information provide the reader with a comprehensive look at tinplate toys produced in Europe.

The Collectors Encyclopedia Toy-Banks Cast Iron, Tin Wind-up, Autos & More With Prices is unlike most collectibles books.

Instead of modern photographs the book is illustrated with period photos and art just as the toys and bank were originally advertised.

Taking images from various catalogs and periodicals the book is a bound time capsule with the original descriptive text and prices listed.

Classic DC Heroes Batman 2

After his initial introduction Batman remained a creature of the night until he teamed up with The Boy Wonder.  After that his adventures became campier.

The Batman figurine from Dark Horse Deluxe comes in a special metal box with a foam rubber cocoon that holds the figure in place along with its special pin and booklet.

On the front of the box is a full color illustration of Batman as he looked in the 1940-50s.  Around the sides of the box are color portraits of other Golden Age DC Comic Book characters.

Two thousand of the Batman figures were made.  I have #1,119.

The inside of the lid has foam piece that when place over the interior foam cocoon seals the figure and keeps it safe form damage and moisture.

A small booklet about Batman is included, as is a small Batman pin with eh portrait of Batman on its front.

The figure sits inside a form-fitted clear plastic cocoon cradles in a foam cocoon.

The sculpted figure stands on a circular brown base.

It poses in a typical superhero stance with arms bent at the elbows and fists clenched.

Batman’s cape drapes over his left shoulder and his face beams with a large smile.

The sculpt work gives the impression that the figure was recently chipped out of stone with chisel marks clearly seen.

Coloration is slightly muted with areas of black brushed into the various hues to give them a slightly aged look.

Batman wears his classic costume of gray leotards, a yellow utility belt, a large blue cape and cowl along with blue knee boots and long gloves with three pointed ‘bat’ wings.

The figure is kept stationary by four felt discs on the bottom of the base.

Modern Toys, Toy Robots, Battery Toys and Japanese Toys

I have a good friend and neighbor across the street from my house that absolutely loves toys-specifically toy robots, tin toys and battery toys.

It just so happens that Schiffer Publishing has a huge selection of books about said subjects and so I thought since he’s a big toy fan like me it would be cool to write a review.

After writing the review I plan on taking the books over to my neighbor and we can both sit down, peruse through the four books’ pages and basically geek out over all the cool toys.  Sounds like a plan.

First up from Schiffer is Modern Toys From Japan 1940s-1980s written and researched by William C. Gallagher.

This oversize hardbound book is chock full of color photos along with full descriptions of each toy and includes a price guide.

There’s even a historical overview.

Talk about a lot of toys! Everything from aircraft, vehicles, animals, boats, cars, buses, Walt Disney figures, playhouse toys and much, much more are included in this colorful, delightful and just plain fun to look at book.

Next up is Toy Robots From Japan by Alan Bunkum, which also includes a price guide.

It too is a large hardbound book filled with techno fantasies color photos.

Each robot is given an extensive examination as to its history, manufacture, technology and more.

Talk about a lot of details!  I never knew there was so much to know about toy robots!  From tinplates to high-tech all of the robots are marvels of Japanese ingenuity and know-how.

Japanese Toys Amusing Things From The Past by William Gallagher also has a price guide included.

This book is heavy on toy history and even includes a gallery of toy company logos!

Every conceivable type of toy is included along with full details, prices, manufacture dates and what material each is made of.

This is a serious book for the serious toy collector.  It’s an absolutely invaluable asset to any Japanese toy collector.

Author Brian Moran has written a book called Battery Toys The Modern Automata (Revised Second Edition) that includes a price guide.

This book examines tinplate toys and novelty toys that walk, run, jump, shoot sparks and just about anything else that battery power allows them to do.

Boy, does this bring back memories.  I loved action/battery toys as kid.  Just watching the toys scoot about, move, light up and spark thrilled me to no end.

Once you take a look at this fascinating book you’ll be just like a little kid again with his or her first electric/battery toy.

I can not stress enough just how highly I recommend all of these book.  Schiffer Publishing produces outstanding books about collectibles of all types.

John Henry “Doc” Holliday

“I’m your Huckleberry.”  Who can forget that memorable phrase uttered by Doc Holliday in the blockbuster movie Tombstone?

Val Kilmer played the heavy drinking, hard living Doc Holliday: Wyatt Earp’s best friend.

The Doc Holliday, 12-inch fully articulated collectible figure was part of Sideshow Collectibles Six Gun Legends series.

The figure (like all Sideshow figures) came in a flip lid box with text details about the figure and historical information on the back of both the box and the inside of the flip lid.

A color photo of an outlaw drawing a gun along with a black and white photo of Doc is on the cover with color photos of the Doc Holliday Sideshow figure on its sides and back.

The figure and accessories are cradled in a form fitting plastic cocoon with an additional plastic strap holding the Doc figure in palace.  A full sheet of clear plastic and a sheet of tissue paper protect all of it.

A circular Doc Holliday base and wire support is included for holding the figure up and for posing.

Also included with the Doc Holliday figure are:

  • A Wide-Brimmed Hat (Grey with a black band)
  • A Shirt with String Tie (White with a black tie)
  • A Vest (Red with gold buttons)
  • Trousers (Grey)
  • A Gun Belt With Holster (Black with a gold buckle)
  • A Colt Peacemaker Pistol (Silver with a wooden handle)
  • A Shoulder Holster (Brown with a buckle)
  • A Walking Stick (Black with a silver pommel)
  • A Double Barreled Shotgun (Silver with a wooden stock)
  • A Flask (Silver with a brown leather wraparound)
  • A Pocket watch and Chain (Silver)
  • A Bloodied Handkerchief (White)

Sideshow Collectibles is big on historical accuracy when it comes to their figures and accessories.  It’s especially true with the Doc Holliday figure.  His clothing is period perfect and his weapons are scaled and designed to look exactly like their larger counterparts.

Clothing moves easily over the figure when posed with no unsightly wrinkles or unrealistic folds or creases.  Buttons and fasteners work and like real clothes the figure’s outfit can be modified to appear open, folded over or tucked in or out.

The handguns slip easily in an out of their holsters and fit snuggly into the figure’s pre-positioned hands with no chance of slippage or wankiness.

Pay particular attention to the firing mechanisms on the weapons, the pommel on the cane, Doc’s watch and chain and the flask.

His hat perches perfectly on his head while his long gray coat with its row of black buttons and twin flap pockets hangs loosely down to his ankles.

Like trousers of that time period the figures pants fit over the figure’s black boots. Even his bloodied spattered handkerchief looks real with its red blood specks.

His shirt collar is short and his black tie is tied to hang loosely just like a period tie.  His red vest is shiny and looks like something a dandy would wear.

The figure’s face has Doc’s characteristic mustache, intense eyes and short-cropped hair.  Its skin is slightly pale echoing Doc’s illness.

It’s an amazing ensemble of figure, weapons and accessories that are historically accurate, highly detailed and professionally packaged and displayed.

The Golden Age of Television

Every person has their favorite period of TV history.  But, experts agree that The Golden Age of Television occured during the 1940s to the 1960s.

For you non-Baby boomers out here The Golden Age Of Television included many classic series like I Love Lucy, Leave It To Beaver, Gunsmoke, Cheyenne, The Naked City and other period shows of all genres.

You must remember that TV was in its infancy and there was a lot of experimentation going on from product merchandising, length of shows, to what type of shows, etc.

Having been born in 1953 I remember many of the 1950s TV shows when they first aired.  I was there in the 1960s when TV exploded into different genres.

The sixties, to me, was the most experimental period, in the 1970s TV had pretty much settled on formats and unfortunately began producing far too many mediocre shows that spoon-fed audiences formulaic stories.

Regardless of what period of TV history you enjoy the most, this book is a great vehicle by which you can travel to the dawn of TV and ride along as it changes, mutates, adapts and evolves.

The photos of classic TV shows, actors and actresses during the formative era of TV serve to remind me of how much things have changed, the incredible talent that have passed away and of a more innocent era.

There’s even a section about British TV.

The Golden Age Of Television by Rick Marschall and published by Exeter Books, provides a wonderful stroll down TV’s Memory Lane.

How To Draw DC Comics Super Heroes

Walter Foster Publishing has long been associated with ‘how to’ drawing, painting and art books. How To Draw DC Comics Super Heroes offers hands-on instructions on how to go about drawing DC Comics characters and comic books in general.

If you love the Warner Bros. animation Superman, Batman and Justice League cartoons then you’re sure to love this instructional book.

The characters are simplified mirroring the look of the various Warner Bros. cartoons.

A colorful cover features the JLA members The Flash, Firestorm, The Huntress, Green Lantern and Hawkgirl starts things off.  The back is a continued wraparound showing the JLA headquarters and a futuristic city.

Inside shows the tools of the trade including pencils, paper, straight edges, etc.  From there basic shapes are introduced and then on to figures, heads, expressions, hands, foreshortening, and ending up with complete lessons on drawing various DC characters.  Various poses and group shots are demonstrated.

A quick lesson on perspective and finally how to drew various building including the JLA Watchtower wraps it up.

It’s a fun and colorful book jammed with great drawing tips and tricks that kids and adults can follow and do.

Romans 8:28-29 (NIV) “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”

Barbarians Featuring Ironjaw #1

When Atlas Comics premiered in the early 1970s the former owner of Marvel Comics (Martin Goodman) hoped to rival Marvel Comics impressive sales numbers.

He had foolishly sold the rights to Marvel Comics and regretted it.  What better way to regain his fortune and save face than creating a comic book publisher that would rival Marvel Comics-perhaps even outsell it?

Goodman decided to follow Marvel’s editorial, writing and art style with his books.  Part of the reason was that with any luck Marvel Comics’ readers would mistake Atlas Comics for Marvel Comics.

The plan didn’t work and in less than a year Atlas folded.

Many of Atlas's titles were blatant rip-offs of Marvel properties.

One such title: Ironjaw was basically Conan The Barbarian with a metal lower jaw.

Barbarians Featuring Ironjaw #1 was one of the better Atlas comic book series.  The first issue consisted of two stories.  Writers included Gary Friedrich and Rolf Kauka with art by Bardon and Pablos Marcos.

The first tale follows Ironjaw as he’s captured by a deadly queen, rescues a damsel in distress and fights a giant warrior.

In the second story Decathlon competitor Michael Rush is an unwitting percipient in a scientist’s experiments.  The result, Michael finds himself awakening 2,000 years in the future where civilization has been destroyed.

He soon finds himself for the fight of his life against a horrible mutant and discovers his dire circumstances.

It’s a pity Atlas Comics did not survive because although the company was a Marvel Comics wannabe I believe after a short time it would have eventually found its own voice.

I’d like to take a moment here to mention something.

As I’ve grown older I’ve learned to appreciate the many blessings God has bestowed on my wife and I.  He’s always provided for us-met our needs and above all guided our lives.

I consider it a wonderful gift that God has allowed me to enjoy collecting comic books and other stuff over the years.  I do not take any of it for granted.  I know that in reality I am only ’borrowing’ the items for nothing is truly mine.

Life is short and like all things it will end.  But, as a wonderful consequence I know I’ll spend eternity with my savior and be reunited with my loved ones forever.  No pain, no tears, no sin and the unconditional love of God.

What more could anyone ask for?

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV) “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

John 10:10 (NIV) “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Wolverine Origin

It seems hard to believe that Wolverine as a boy was sickly-that is until his mother was accosted.  Then his bone claws extended and his life was changed forever.

For years very little was known about Wolverine’s past.  Even his name was unknown until well into his tenure in The Uncanny X-Men.

Wolverine’s real name is James Hudson and he inherited his mutant abilities from his father.  His cousin/brother: Sabretooth is also a mutant with catlike claws.

The Dynamic Forces Wolverine Origin bust is a good representation of Wolverine when his claws first emerged as seen in the Origin mini-series.

The box the statue comes in is a direct copy of the artwork used on one of the issues of the mini-series in addition to a photo of the statue.

The figure comes packaged in a Styrofoam box in which the figure fits in the inner cutout sections.  It is also wrapped in a foam sheet. My statue is #14 out of 2,000 from Dynamic Forces.

The figure, with base, stands about eight inches tall.

The circular base looks like a wood carved Victorian stand with laminates, cut reliefs and decorative wolf life human faces on three sides.

The base has four felt pads underneath for stabilization.

Wolverine is seen from the waist up wearing an old-style sleeping garment that is blood stained around the waist.

The garment is gray with two buttons at the chest.  The collar is open and draped back over Wolverine’s shoulders.

The figure holds his arms at each side bent at the elbows. Both fists are clenched and bloody bone claws extends from each hand.

The figure’s muscles are tensed and the tendons are pronounced.

His head is held back exposing the neck muscles and tendons and larynx areas.

James’ head is chin up with his mouth side open revealing his teeth and inner mouth.

His eyes are closed and his black eyebrows raised.  His short black hair is slicked back.

The figure looks as if it is in agony.

Blood is spattered on his cloths and arms.

The sculpt work is amazing, especially on the base and Wolverine’s torso and back.

Clothing folds are nicely done and coloration is tight with good coverage and slight tonal variations

Overall the figure and base are well crafted, nicely executed, superbly sculpted and realistically painted.

A Certificate of Authenticity is included bearing the signature of the sculptor: Martin Canale.

Cry Macho

Actor/director Clint Eastwood reminds me of the Energizer Bunny.  He never runs out of energy and keeps on going.

Eastwood is in his 90s and maintains a strong presence in Hollywood.  He still acts in and directs movies-many of which have become classics.

In Warner Bros. Cry Macho Clint plays a one-time rodeo star and horse breeder who is asked by a former employer to retrieve his son from his alcoholic mother living in Mexico.

Eastwood agrees and retrieves the young boy but with serious consequences and trouble.

On their journey back to the U.S.A. Eastwood and the boy develop a special bond.  He becomes a sort of surrogate father/grandfather to the boy.

Reluctantly at first the boy eventually warms up to him and listens to his guidance.

Rough around the edges, crusty and often cantankerous Eastwood eventually warms up to the boy and he begins to teach him about what it means to be a man.

As with all of his movies whether he is starring in or directing, or both, Eastwood underplays much of the scenes and delivers big when it comes to the final consequences or resolutions.

Special features on the Blu-ray/Digital Code Combo Pack include the making of the film, a step on the set and more.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

RWBY Volume 8

I have no idea who or what RWBY is.  I received a Blu-ray copy of RWBY Volume 8 from Rooster Teeth Productions, LLC/Warner Bros. and I’m at a loss for words on how to review it.

I watched a few episodes and was impressed by the graphics and computer animation.  The soundtrack kicks and the characters are distinct from one another, brought about by designs, movements and attitudes

It’s a beautifully executed Anime but having not watched the series from the beginning I had a hard time wrapping my mind around the series.

From what I gather its centers around the struggle to save humanity.  A group of individuals with specific skills fight the good fight but as friends turn into enemies the true enemy seems to have the upper hand.

Here's a short description I pulled form the internet:

"RWBY imagines a world filled with horrific monsters bent on death and destruction, and humanity’s only hope lies with powerful Huntsmen and Huntresses. Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long are four such Huntresses-in-training, and their journey takes them far beyond the gates of Beacon Academy as they confront dark forces and work as a team to become the next generation of Remnant’s protectors.

In RWBY volume eight, our heroes’ worst fears have finally been realized: Salem is here, and the timing couldn’t be worse for the divided Kingdom of Atlas. Fear has turned the friends into enemies, and doubt threatens to splinter Humanity’s remaining allies. With both Salem and Ironwood stacking the odds against them, and the fate of Remnant at stake, it’s up to Team RWBY to make their play before it’s too late."

Special features delve more into the series and a set of RWBY Justice League Art Cards is also included.

Anime lovers are sure to enjoy the series.  As for me I need to go back and binge watch the earlier episodes so I can familiarize myself with the storyline.

As for now, I can recommend the Blu-ray simply on face value.  It’s nicely animated, moves along quickly and contains its fair share of surprises.
