Darkstar #1

DC Comics Darkstar characters always seemed to me to be second tier Green Lanterns.  Issue #1 delves more into the mission and operations of the Darkstars.

What makes the series especially interesting is that after the series began a new, young artist took over the pencils.  That artist, Travis Charest, would soon blossom into one of the most accomplished illustrators in the industry.

In the first issue Darkstar, Sata-breath is starting to find his occupation a bore.

He’s dispatched to a distant planet to thwart a pack of alien thugs from committing a kidnapping.

He returns home to his base and is reprimanded by his superior for his lackluster performance.

His next assignment takes him to Earth. He discovers a certain criminal organization is in cahoots with a nasty alien crime lord.

While investigating the criminal activities the Darkstar reluctantly takes on a human partner to aid him in his assignment to stop the human/alien drug cartel.

It’s a pretty cut and dry story-at first.  Things get interesting in the last two pages when the police come face to face with a giant alien killer.

Darkstar had a lot of potential but never really caught on with readers.  It struggled in its print run eventually disappearing from shelves.

Spectres #1s

The Spectre has changed little over the decades since he was first created back in the Golden Age of comic books.

DC Comics Spectre’s powers have grown over the years, as has his mission

Today he is one of the most powerful supernatural beings in the DC Universe.  That was not always the case.

In 1987 The Spectre returns to earth for vengeance as drawn by Gene Colan.  This version is the Spectre at his most powerful and most fantastic.

In 2002 The Spectre gets a little more down to earth and returns to his original purpose-the punishment of criminals in the most horrific means possible.

Things get shook up as a new human host is chosen for the Spectre and he’s not happy about it in 2006.

Despite what version of The Spectre you choose DC Comics has a knack for never quite knowing what to do with him and that’s a shame.

Considering he is one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe and the master of the supernatural you would think he would be used more.

The only writer (in my opinion) who really hit the nail on the head as far as The Spectre goes was Alan Moore  The man understood the nether realm and used The Spectre to his full potential.

Join him up with The Phantom Stranger, Etrigan The Demon, Deadman, The Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Zatanna, Cain and Abel, The Three Witches, John Constantine and other classic supernatural beings and The Spectre could be the central character guiding the others to their various adventures.  Throw in Eclipso and other supernatural baddies and the series could be a hit.

DC has sort of approached that angle with its Justice League Dark.

Let’s hope The Spectre soon receives the attention he is due and deserves.

The Making Of The Empire Strikes Back

By far my favorite Star Wars film is Chapter 5: The Empire Strikes Back.

Everything clicked in the film: the acting, special effects, soundtrack, practical effects, sets, costumes, direction--everything.  Most Star Wars fans agree.

A have large number of books about Star Wars are in my collection.  Of those there are about a half dozen that I consider the cream of the crop.  This book is one of them.

The Empire Strikes back was the second Star Wars movie released.

What makes Empire so unusual and special is that it was completely different in tone from the first film.  Empire is considered the ‘dark’ film of the original Trilogy.

George Lucas handed off the direction of the movie to Irwin Kirshner (a brillaint move on his part) and it shows.

Character development is much more insightful, the action sequences bigger in scale and the overall look of the film much more epic.

What impresses me most about the The Making Of The Empire Strikes Back book is the sheer volume of information and photos contained. Both publicity and behind-the-scenes photos (some never seen before) along with exhaustive and highly descriptive text make the book both a visual and reading treasure.

The huge oversize hardbound book with a dust jacket is written and compiled by J.W. Rinzler and published by Ballantine Books.

Alien director Ridley Scott provides the foreword.

The book is the most comprehensive examination of the film ever published in my opinion.

Page after page contains photos of pre-post and final production of actors, action sequences, lighting setups, set prep, deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes and more.

Comprehensive text delves into every aspect of making the film from designs of the sets, costumes, etc, to script rewrites, direction, music, practical and visual effects--the entire gamut of producing a block buster film.

This is a book that you can spend literally hours looking over the art and photos, delving into the text and immersing yourself into the sheer volume of work that went into making the film.

A New Hope and Return Of The Jedi also have similar books.

DC Comics Presents Annual #3

The cover says it all: Superman, SHAZAM! and Doctor Silvana.

Writer Roy Thomas once again proves that he is the master historian of DC Comics history and master artist Gil Kane turn in a fantastic story with DC Comics Presents Annual #3.

Kane turns in some the bet work of his career in a thrilling tale of magic, muscle and multi-verses.

When Doctor Silvana devises a plan to duplicate SHAZAM!’s powers even Superman can't stand up to his magical might.

All looks lost until SHAZAM!, Superman, part of the SHAZAM! family and an alternate earth Superman team-up to stop the mad scientist.

A giant robot, Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel, Jr., Earth Two Superman, Superman, SHAZAM!, combine to make this a memorable DC Comics story with tons of action, excitement and a classic tale.

If you haven’t read it I suggest you search out a copy.  With the upcoming SHAZAM! 2 movie soon to premiere it’s sure to become a SHAZAM! classic.

Frank Frazetta Fantasy Illustrated #1

When artist/painter Frank Frazetta painted the covers to the re-released paperback books of the adventures of Conan The Barbarian by Robert E. Howard he ushered in a new era of fantasy illustration.

The Frank Frazetta Fantasy Illustrated magazine gave readers at look at some of the best of the best domestic sci-fi and fantasy art imaginable.

Over the years a number of fantasy art magazines have been published-Heavy Metal and Epic come to mind.

But, none of them had the blessing of what many fans consider the father of modern fantasy illustrations: Frank Frazetta.

Fantasy Illustrated #1 boasts and impressive roster of artists starting with a cover by Frazetta.

Richard Corben, Joseph Michael Linsner, William Stout, Elfquest artist Wendy Pini, cover artist Joe Jusko, Tony Daniel, Alex Horley and Kabuki creator David Mack all contributed stories.

It’s an impressive first issue.  Unfortunately the series lasted a little more than a dozen issues.

If the current comic book craze continues look for Fantasy Illustrated issues to become highly collectibles.  Many popular artists and their creations make their appearances in the issues: Kabuki and Elfquest being perfect examples.

Justice League Of America #200

Ya gotta hand it to penciller George Perez when it comes to oversize, mega-appearance anniversary issues no one beats him when it comes to action and detail.

This issue contains some of the earliest work he did for DC Comics.  He was just starting to design pages packed with characters all with individual looks.

Later on The New Teen Titans, Crisis On Infinite Earths and various series and mini-series for DC Comics his ability to stage massive character crossovers cemented itself.

Why are the newest members of the Justice League duking it out with the founding members in Justice League Of America #200?  Good question.  Here’s the answer.

It all occurs when a menace for the original Justice League members encountered one of their first adversaries.

For some unknown reason they have forgotten their current tam members and are determined to see their current roster of new members.

Fortunately they recovering and the entire team sets out to stop whoever is responsible for their predicament.

It’s classic JLA action in an epic tale that celebrates the team’s 200th issue.

Be sure to get an issue as individual original Justice League team adventures are pencilled by some of DC Comics veteran pencillers such as Gil Kane Jim Aparo and others.

Times Are Tough

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that times are tough. High gas and food prices, skyrocketing rental and home purchase costs, distribution problems, unsettling world conflicts and political and social upheaval-the list goes on and on

People have very little disposable income. Comic book, book, toy and other collectible sales are down as are other products on people’s wish lists.

It seems everywhere you look people are hurting and stressed. Honestly, if wasn’t for the fact that I’m saved and confident that God has everything under control I’d be stressed, panicked and lost as to what to do.

Like other endeavors my blog has been hit by the troubling economic times. Review samples have nearly dried up. With the high cost of producing goods, expensive mailing and shipping rates and the upheaval in manufacturing overseas it’s easy to see why.

But, I refuse to give up. God has a plan for my life and that includes my blog. To me it is more than just reviewing products. It’s a great way to communicate the love of God in the scriptures I include in my reviews and the opportunity it gives me to praise God.

Sure, product review samples are few and far between but I won’t let that stop me.

I have plenty of old comic books, books, toys and other merchandise that I can retro review. Think of it as stroll down Memory Lane.

That’s not to say I don’t want review samples to come in. I welcome any and all review samples that publishers and manufacturers provide.

If you are interested in having your products reviewed all you have to do is contact me via the contact form on my blog’s homepage.

Thanks to everyone who has stuck with me all these years. God willing I still have a few more years to review products under my belt.

Silver Age DC Comics

Taschen Books released the ultimate guide to the Silver Age of DC Comics.

The Silver Age DC Comics, by Paul Levitz, is one of my favorite books about comics.  I’m a huge fan of the Silver Age, especially as it pertains to DC Comics and Marvel Comics.

DC is responsible for the genesis of the Silver Age when it brought back the Flash, albeit as a new character based on science.  Barry Allen gets doused with chemical when lightning strikes and he suddenly finds himself super fast.

From out of that one incident the entire Silver Age of DC Comics was born.  Soon other revamped and updated Golden Age DC characters appeared like The Atom, Hawkman, Green Lantern and many more.

Not long afterward new and original Silver Age characters and titles appeared brought on by the impressive issues sold about the revamped heroes.

The Silver Age Of DC Comics book is bulging with art (interior and covers) spotlighting every major and second tier characters and groups.

How can you go wrong with an oversize hardbound book all wrapped up in a silver dust jacket?  Talk about classy.

Inside the entire history of DC Comics in the Silver Age is recounted that includes original art, sketches, covers, interior pages and comprehensive text and captions.

It took me literally hours to read and peruse through this book.  Occasionally I’ll go back and look over it again only to find even more stuff I missed the first time.

Learn about the artists, writers, production staff and the inner workings (along with the office gossip) about the era and the publisher that changed comic books forever and for the better.

If it were not for DC Comics taking a chance and reintroducing classic characters (albeit updated for the time) there would be no comic book industry as we know it today.

Batman Beyond #1s

Batman Beyond from DC Comics has become a very popular character.  He’s had a number of number one issues and series and I’m going to review two of them.  One is from 2010 and one from 2011.

In the 2010 issue Batman Beyond (hereby referred to only as Batman) things start out fast and furious as Batman takes on Spellbinder and meets up with the future version of The Atom: Micron.

Micron asks Batman to join the Justice League.  Batman declines.

Back at the Batcave Batman meets up with Bruce Wayne and just as Batman is about to leave a police report comes in.

Batman investigates and as he comforts one of the criminal’s victims she tells him that the criminal's name is Hush.  (Sound familiar?)

Also included is an Action Comics #390 preview.

In the 2011 #1 issue things really start to heat up as Batman encounters the new Justice League consisting of Green Lantern, Aquagirl, Micron, Barda and Warhawk.

A sneak peek at DC Universe Legends #1 is also included in which Lex Luthor kills Superman-bad mistake!

Wolverine: Logan 1/4 Scale Figure

Far and away Wolverine is my favorite Marvel Comics characters-probably my favorite comic book character of all time.  DC Comics Batman is a close second.

Let me clarify that.  Logan (Wolverine) of the Dave Cockrum/John Byrne era is my favorite-way before his ‘Origin” was told.

There’s something fascinating about the short, fierce, nigh indestructible wild man from Canada that strikes a cord with other comic book fans and me.

I’m talking about the pre-Hugh Jackman movie Wolverine.  I loved the mystery about the character, the uncertainty if he would go berserk, how old he was and how did he get to be who he is.

To me, when Marvel Comics revealed his past, where his claws came from and turned him into an emotionally damaged (deep down decent guy) and bleeding heart, Wolverine lost much of his charm.

Sideshow Collectibles created a Logan 1/4 Scale Figure (Sideshow's first) back in the early 2000s limited to 1,500 figure I was fortunate enough to get a review sample.

The massive figure comes in a large vertical box in black covered by a slipcase featuring photos of the figure.  Inside the figure is snug in a form-fitting Styrofoam casing.

WOW!  That's the best way to describe this figure.  Talk about authentic looking!  It is Wolverine as originally envisioned, right down to his real metal claws, white T-t-shirt, blue jeans and cowboy boots.  There’s even a Wolverine metal dog tag.

As with all of Sideshow’s figures the Logan figure’s clothing is perfectly to scale, made of the actual materials used by the various garments and features some of the most amazing facial and body sculpture imaginable.

Logan's face is a study is bridled rage with his thick sweptback black hair, deep furrowed brow, squinting eyes, snarled lips and teeth with a cigar extending from the right side and his muscular torso.

Both fists are clenched with real steel blades extending form his hands between the knuckles,

In this particular review I prefer to let the visuals show the details of the character.  Look and enjoy.

"Space, The Final Frontier." Star Trek Starship Spotter

So you think you can identify every starship in the Star Trek Universe?  I did, boy was I wrong!

Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Ferengi, Cardassian-they’re all examined along with many other spacecraft.

Inside Star Trek Starship Spotter you’ll see every type of spacecraft utilized by each civilization broken down in segmented wire frames and in full color.

Star Trek Starship Spotter by Adam “Mojo” Lebowitz and Robert Bonchune and published by Pocket Books, is the perfect resource for identifying the Star Trek Universe starships.

The book examines the starships from the pre-Kelvin timeline as established in the 2009 Star Trek movie.

These are the classic ships introduced in The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and the Original and Next Generation movies.  The Enterprise TV show had yet to premiere.

Double-page and full-color spreads highlight each spacecraft allowing the reader to see them with their lights on and in deep space settings

Each starship has its mission, features, background and specifications provided.

It’s an extremely comprehensive book filled with important facts and specs and expertly laid out for easy reference.

Reality For The Average Comic Book Collector

I enjoy going online and looking at collecting comic book videos on You Tube.

I’m referring to just a handful of collectors/speculators who tout the ‘Top 10’ and sending their books off to CGC (Certified Guaranty Company).

That’s all fine and dandy but I’ve found a few problems with their approach to collecting comic books as it pertains to most comic book readers/collectors.

First and foremost is the cost.

Back issue ‘key’ sales have gone through the roof!  I don’t know about you but I can’t afford to plop down hundreds or thousands of dollars for comic books.

Comic book speculation is a very iffy proposition.

For example.  Let's say I purchase a ‘hot’ comic book for $200.  I then send it to CGC and get it graded.  It comes back as 9.8 with a ‘value’ of $1,000.

Where does CGC come off determining comic books’ grades?  Who exactly grades comic books?  Is it dealers?  If so, isn’t that a conflict of interest?

OK, so I’ve made $800-right?  Not necessarily.  First off I have to take into account that I have to pay for postage both to and from CGC.  Then I have to pay the cost of grading the comic book.

I’ll be generous and say the total cost is $100.  Taking that into consideration my ‘profit’ is now $700-right?

Not so fast.  Say I want to sell the comic book.  I can do it on E-bay, Amazon or some other social network site.  I get bids, none of which reach the $1,000 my book is supposedly worth.

For the sake of time, let’s say the final bid comes in at $900.  I decide to sell.  I now have to package the book up and ship it out.  My time is worth money.

The buyer receives the book, questions its grade, but eventually I get my $900.

Remember after my costs the book was only worth $700 if the book sold for the actual $1,000-which it didn’t.  It sold for $100 less than amount.  So technically my book is only worth $600.

That does not include my time and the effort I took to sell it.  That’s a lot of work for one book and most books do not sell what their supposed CGC value is.

If I took the book to a show I wouldn’t get as much as I wanted nor if I sold it to an individual-that’s almost a certainty.

Let’s be honest most comic books printed in the last 20 or 30 years will lose their value. You’re seeing it already.

Collecting comic books and maintaining their ‘value’ involves travel expenses, supply costs, shipping expenses and much more.

Have you seen the cost of comic book boxes, sleeves and backing boards lately?! Outrageous.

Most, if not all, of the ‘collectors’ who showoff their acquisitions are dealers of one sort or another.  They make their living off of selling comic books.

They offer people a fraction of what books are worth-jack up the prices and basically play the game.

If I were a comic book dealer masquerading as collector I would push the value of my books and promote certain titles I have a huge inventory of as hot.

Remember there’s a sucker born every minute and these so-called collectors try to take advantage of them.

I’ve seen ‘collectors’ brag about buying a collection for pennies on the dollar and then turn around and boast about their acquisition and the high-end and expensive titles they got out of the purchase.

I have absolutely no respect for dealers that buy up collections for a song and then turn around and charge collectors a fortune for the same titles they paid a pittance for.

I witnessed one dealer who paid less than a thousand dollars for a collection of graded books and profited ten times that amount.

To put it simply-I do not trust most online collector/dealers no matter how nice they try to come across.

I’ve discovered if I challenge their assertions by replying to their videos I have yet to see any of my comments make it to their comments sections.  Nobody gets all positive feedback.

Go on-try to find any negative comments-you won’t-it’s bad for business.

Let the buyer and seller beware.  Unless you’re in the business of buying low, selling high and dealing dishonestly stick to just collecting.

If you do decide to sell your collection, it’s best to stick with other collectors.

Know the value of your books, do your homework and go into any transaction with your eyes wide open.  An informed consumer is a smart consumer.

Proverbs 21:3 (NKJV) ‘To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.”

The Original TV Tough Guy: Mannix The Third Season

When I think of a tough and resilient private detective my mind immediately goes to Joe Mannix from the Mannix TV series as portrayed by actor Mike Connors.

The TV series Mannix set new precedents when it came to action/crime stories.  Quick editing, the elimination of enter and exit scenes and clever camera work moved each story at a fast pace.

Mike Connors willingness to do most of his stunts and his superb acting ability made him the perfect choice for the role.

The show is credited for its innovative approach to filming and post production.  Many of today’s detective/crime TV shows owe a great deal of debt to Mannix’s groundbreaking work.

Mannix was all adrenaline and action.  Gunplay was frequent.

Joe Mannix had the unfortunate talent for being shot, blinded, beat-up, suffer broken bones and still, somehow, managed to catch the bad guys.

The show also has the distinction of having a black female co-star, something practically unheard of in the 1960s and early 1970s.

In fact, many believe there was a romance between Mannix and his black secretary Peggy Fair-a single mother who policeman husband was killed in the line of duty.

He and Mannix were good friends.

Mannix was known to do things his way and had an uncanny knack for sniffing out clues and getting to the truth.

This talent did not necessarily make him popular with some in law enforcement.

The show ran eight seasons and always rated in the top TV shows.  It was cancelled because of the outrage by some individuals about too much violence in TV.

Compared to today’s cop shows Mannix was tame.  Regardless, it was a great show and always delivered powerful stories.

The Mannix Third Season DVD was released by CBS/Paramount.

Return To Canyon Creek

Luxton Danner and Wes Payne are back! This time they take on a ruthless land grabber.

In John Layne’s novel Return To Canyon Creek gunfighter Luxton Danner and his friend Wes Payne answer the call to stop a vicious and ruthless land baron, by the name of Gilford Cox, from taking over the town of Canyon Creek and the surrounding land.

He plans on acquiring all of the land and town to profit when a railroad passes through the territory.

He hires every no-good rustler, outlaw, gunslinger and anyone else who works for hire to terrorize the local inhabitants and to force them to sell him their land.

Only he never counted on Danner and Layne and several others to arrive and defend the town and its people.

It’s old-fashioned Western justice with plenty of shoot-outs, fights and ruckus as both side collide.

Return To Canyon Creek, published by Labrador Publishing, is written the way a true Western should be.

What I love about the book is the author takes time to flesh out each character and describes how life was in the Old West complete with dirt, dust and danger.

Gunfights are depicted accurately as real and men die, bullets do horrible damage and death is ever present.

Here’s to author John Layne.  I hope you continue to write the adventures of Danner and Payne for years to come.  I enjoy each of their tales and I can’t wait to read more.

"In Space No One Can Hear You Scream!" Aliens Action Fleet Narcissus

When the Aliens movie hit movie theater moviegoers weren’t sure what to expect.

Would the film be a rehash of the original Alien movie-a horror film in outer space?

What moviegoers got was a kick-butt action movie courtesy of director James Cameron.

Besides the break-neck speed action and spectacular special effects one of the biggest stars of the movie was the Narcissus: a modified Lockmart Starcub light shuttle lifeboats from the Weyland-Yutani commercial hauler USCSS Nostrodomo.

Ellen Ripley used it to escape in the original Alien movie. She woke up almost 70 years later after a salvage ship discovered her in suspended animation.

Recently Micro-Machines has made a comeback from its long absence from toy shelves.  While products are limited there was a time when Micro-Machines seemingly ruled the toy aisles.

Vehicles of al sorts, aircraft, miniature figures, playsets, movie and TV ties-in-the sky was the limit.

The Aliens Action Fleet Narcissus comes in a box measuring approximately 8” X 6” X 6” X 6” give or take a few inches.

The top and front, along with small side slits, consists of clear plastic for easy viewing of the ship within.

Included with ship is a custom black Aliens base.

The ship sits on a slanted elevated platform and is held in place by plastic strips, as is the base.

Two small, articulated figures come with the ship: Ellen Ripley and an Alien.  Both are painted and scaled to the ship.

The ship exterior has six front windows, twin engines, workable landing gears and a removable front section that allows access to the interior.

Inside are level activated secret panels (one of which the Alien can hide in, a clear plastic Life Support Module with Sleep Chamber, twin gray seats and computer and equipment panels.

Both the interior and exterior are highly detailed, nicely engineered and functional.

While paint application is minimal the parts that are painted are clean, crisp and movie accurate.

With all of its nooks and crannies, hidden panels and playability the Narcissus spaceship, base and figures are loaded for play and ready to be displayed.
