When artist/painter Frank Frazetta painted the covers to the re-released paperback books of the adventures of Conan The Barbarian by Robert E. Howard he ushered in a new era of fantasy illustration.
The Frank Frazetta Fantasy Illustrated magazine gave readers at look at some of the best of the best domestic sci-fi and fantasy art imaginable.
Over the years a number of fantasy art magazines have been published-Heavy Metal and Epic come to mind.
But, none of them had the blessing of what many fans consider the father of modern fantasy illustrations: Frank Frazetta.
Fantasy Illustrated #1 boasts and impressive roster of artists starting with a cover by Frazetta.
Richard Corben, Joseph Michael Linsner, William Stout, Elfquest artist Wendy Pini, cover artist Joe Jusko, Tony Daniel, Alex Horley and Kabuki creator David Mack all contributed stories.
It’s an impressive first issue. Unfortunately the series lasted a little more than a dozen issues.
If the current comic book craze continues look for Fantasy Illustrated issues to become highly collectibles. Many popular artists and their creations make their appearances in the issues: Kabuki and Elfquest being perfect examples.
