Swamp Thing #11

It’s difficult to follow a class act and artist Nestor Redondo had his work set out for him following legendary artist Bernie Wrightson’s run on DC Comics’ Swamp Thing.

Len Wein stayed on as the writer but with Bernie gone and the heart and soul of the muck monster was never the same.

It wasn’t easy following in the steps of Bernie Wrightson but artist Nestor Redondo did a pretty good job starting with Swamp Thing issue #11.

It’s obvious he tried to emulate Wrightson's style right down to the shadows and facial features of the characters.

Things never seem to slow down for the Swamp Thing.  No sooner does one strange encounter end than another begins.

In issue #11 Abby and her new companion are captured by strange worm warriors after being attacked by mutated alligator/human hybrid.

Swamp Thing dispatches the creature but is too late to stop the worm creatures abducting his friends.

When they awake they find themselves in a strange domed city ruled by a madman.

The man is a scientist who constructed the strange dwelling and rules it, along with his worm companions.  Only the worms have plans of their own-specifically capturing humans to use as food in their underground kingdom.

Fortunately Swamp Thing intervenes and the city, scientists and worms are destroyed-or are they?

What makes this issue unusual is while it followed the typical Wein and Wrightson formula it seemed to come out a little silly under the new team of Wein and Redondo.

It just goes to show that with the proper artist and writer no matter how ridiculous or silly a tale is the proper talent can make a rose out of an onion.

Ephesians 4:29Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
