I miss John Byrne’s art in the mainstream comic book titles
of Marvel and DC. For whatever reasons
he has not worked for either of them in a number of years. Thankfully John has linked up with IDW who
has the intelligence to let John have free reign to do whatever he wants to
do. The result? Some of John’s best work!
Case in point. John’s
new series: The Highways. Issue number one lets John demonstrate just how
talented he is as not only as an artist but a writer.
No one does aliens, strange craft, spaceships, interiors and
exteriors of buildings better than John.
Some of today’s artists should take notice of how John excels in story-telling,
incorporates new technology in his work and continually improves his story-telling
ability.
The story begins when Eddie Wallace, a neophyte navigator,
meets Marilyn Jones, the second-in-command of the space transport the Carol
Ann.
After fitting Eddie for a spacesuit, they meet of with the Carol
Ann’s captain-Jack.
In short order they set out on the first mission with Eddie
aboard as navigator- a trip to Europa-an eight month trip.
The trip proceeds uneventfully until they arrive.
The station on Europa has no idea why the Carol Ann crew is
there as they did not request them or their supplies.
As the Carol Ann captain investigates the mystery deepens.
This is classic Byrne coupled with some new innovations and story-telling
surprises-Don’t miss it!
