Anyone who knows me knows that the original Star Trek TV series starring Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Chapel, Rand, Chekov, Sulu and Uhura is my favorite.
As a kid I thrilled to the adventures of the Enterprise NCC-1701 Constitution Class Starship of The United Federation of Planets.
I remember how fascinated I was with all the gadgets seen on the TV show.
You have to remember this was over 50 years ago and things like Communicators (cell phones), monitors (flat screen TVs), Tricorders (laptops/tablets, Phasers (lasers) and the other assorted tech goodies on the show were way ahead of their time.
A few years back actor William Shatner (Captain Kirk) hosted a TV show where he took credit for the modern electronic devices we take for granted nowadays. Jokingly he stated that the cell phones, etc, were all created in Star Trek TOS.
It was funny, but so true.
Back in the early 2000s Diamond Select Toys released a trio of Star Trek TOS technical goodies. Perfectly in scale and looking absolutely authentic to the originals seen on the show, the minute I saw them I had to have them.
I swapped some toys with the local toy store to get them.
When I was in my late teens and early 20s AMT Model kits released a tri-pack of Star Trek TOS instruments including the Tricorder, Phaser and Communicator.
I owned them at one time but unfortunately they are long gone.
But, take heart. Diamond Select Toys have faithfully recreated all three and they are awesome!
The Communicator is a perfect replica of the original featuring the same surface textures and features.
The Communicator has a rotating array, working lights, a working red alert button and features the voices of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura.
It’s like holding of piece of Star Trek TOS TV history! Everything is correct from the dark gray body of the Phaser to the silver emitter array and transparent ray emitter, the black handgrip, silver button.
The Type-1 Hand Phaser has silver piping and grid and a power switches for power settings and trigger activation.
The solid black case with silver piping has three flip open access points.
The top points include the miniature monitoring screen complete with energy charts and readouts. A small silver mesh speaker screen and three lights and dials make up the section.
Below in the second section are various power controls and a large power readout screen.
The third flip open compartment is for storage.
A separate Electronic Science Scanner with working light stores in the lower section.
The Tricorder also includes sounds and phrases from the TOS including the voice of Spock. A leather shoulder strap is also included.
I love the detailing on the Tridcorder with silver handles, trim and instrument back panels. Everything looks authentic.
The Phaser, Tricorder and Communicator are made of touch resilient plastic with excellent paint application, careful attention to detais and lots of fun light and sound extras. Batteries are included.
It’s like being a part of a way team and equipped with the latest Federation hardware.
