Back in the 1960s I had my favorite female characters from TV shows.
Like many young men I adored Mary Jane on Gilligan’s Island, fell head over heels for Yvonne Craig as Batgirl, had the hots for Lieutenant Uhura from Star Trek, was mesmerized by Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie, thought Emma Peele was the coolest chick around and was ‘bewitched’ by Elizabeth Montgomery.
Honey West was my kind of private detective, Agent 99 could spy on me any time, Ellie May made me want to move to the country and Sally Field as Gidget was just plain cute.
Little did I realize at the time that each of these female characters were carefully groomed and educated on how to be the perfect females that guys would go ga-ga over.
The network TV bigwigs, producers and casting directors knew exactly what they were doing when they introduced each and every one to national TV audiences.
