A few years back DC Comics decided to bring back the superhero and adventure stars of the animation studio Hanna-Barbera.
The original animated series premiered in the 1960s and Warner Bros./DC Comics have updated the characters for the 21st Century.
In Future Quest Volume 1 a mysterious energy vortex has increased in appearances over the past few years. Doctor Quest has been tracking the phenomenon and collecting artifacts its left behind.
Unfortunately his arch nemesis Doctor Sin has also tracked the phenomenon hell-bent on not only collecting artifacts but determined to control the unknown power.
As a kid I loved watching the Hanna-Barbera heroes on TV. I still do. Space Ghost, Birdman, The Impossibles, Jonny Quest, The Herculoids, Frankenstein Junior-and on and on.
What a wonderful reintroduction to the characters. Granted they are updated but the look and the feel of the characters remains pretty much as I remember them. It’s nice to see them back in action.
One of favorite artists: Steve (The Dude) Rude, contributes artwork to the book. His earlier work on Space Ghost really captured the look and feel of the animated series-it does here as well.
Besides the collection of the firsts issue of the HB/DC series the collected Universe set also includes sketches, covers and a writer commentary.
Far from just nostalgic the Future Quest books updated the characters and with any luck they'll crop up again in other DC Comic Books.
