NO ONE does superhero comic books better than John Byrne-especially
superhero team books. Considering the
man’s age (early sixties) John Byrne continues to be one of the most
innovative, imaginative and technically savvy comic book artists today. Some may say his heyday is long past but I
have to disagree. The various titles John
has been turning out for IDW have been some of the best work during his long
and illustrious career.
With Triple Helix #1 Byrne returns to one of his IDW previous
titles, Trio, and takes up the story where he left it as a cliffhanger. Rock, the massive strongman of Trio, has been
zapped and buried under ruble. When he
revives his appearance has been altered.
Along comes Triple Helix (whose members look somehow familiar) who
promptly think he is the bad guy and proceed to try and trounce him. You’ll notice I said ”try”.
What results is one long and glorious fight sequence that
only a master of the craft like John Byrne could pull off. Eventually things cool off and the real bad
guy is dispatched-permanently-or so it seems.
And just when things seem to settle down along come the robotic
Monitors.
Talk about jam-packed pages!
I was out of breath by the time the issue ended!
Once again Byrne proves he is the cartoonist’s cartoonist as
he delivers another ‘more-bang-for-your-buck issue that proves no one does it
better than Byrne.
For you old-timers out there be sure to pick up on the
various ‘tributes’ John sneaks in. You’ll
be ‘X’cited by the ‘wonder’ of it all and have a ‘super’ time and wonder what’s
‘next’.
