Repeating And Multi-Fire Weapons

Like any Baby Boomer young boy I loved playing with toys guns.

After all TV Westerns, War movies, Detective shows and Crime comic books were extremely popular. Little boys ate them up and I was no exception.

I still like guns. I have several. but to as to how they work, their history and so forth I am totally in the dark. Until now.

The Avengers

I remember the very first issue of The Avengers by Marvel Comics that I read. 

It was issue #4 when The Avengers discovered the frozen body of Captain America in the ice.

I was so enthralled by the issue that I went back and bought the first three issues of The Avengers to catch up on the super group’s adventures.

This was back in the days when comic books tended to stay on the newsstands for long periods of time. It was easier to find earlier issues.

Just imagine how excited I was to purchase a comic book that had ALL of the major Marvel Comics heroes in one title. A whole new world of adventure opened up for me.

It was like magic.

Author Rich Johnson and Rizzoli/Universe has captured some of that magic in their new book: The Avengers: Heroes, Icons, Assembled.

This gorgeous, oversize, hardbound book has a beautiful color cover painting featuring Thor, Captain America and Ironman, Avengers' member indicia on the inside front and back inside covers and a full color group shot on the back cover.

A two-page color painting spread by Alex Ross starts things off then writer Mark Waid provides the foreword.

Inside full color, interior and cover art, accompanied by text, examines secret origins, the various Avengers teams, villains, missions, crossovers, epic sagas and every conceivable incident starring or co-starring the various Avengers members.

What a feast for the eyes! The colors really pop on the high-gloss interior paper-stock pages.

Longtime Avengers and Marvel Comics fans and newcomers will love the jam-packed pages of illustrations and art along with the informative text.

I thought I knew a lot about The Avengers but after looking at and reading this book I’ve come to realize I have a lot to learn.

Visible V-8 Engine

I can’t believe Revell Model Kits sent it to me to review! It’s like a dream come true.

As a kid one of my best friends had Revell’s Visible V-8 Engine model kit. I thought it was so cool!

Imagine assembling a model kit that is clear so you can see its inner workings. You can see the engine operate!

A stand comes with the engine along with a hand crank that lets you operate the engine manually. A simple turn of the crank and the crankshaft, pistons and values move!

I always wanted one from the first time I saw it and now I have one. Who says wishes don’t come true?

There are 11 part trees in gray, white, black and clear. The color designations allow modelers to easily assemble the entire engine using the instructions and coinciding numbers listed on the parts.

A screwdriver, hex nuts, short and long round head screws, a fan belt, vinyl tubing and a coiled spring are also included.

The HUGE model kit comes in a heavy duty cardboard box with a full color photo of the engine on its lid. Side panels show photos of various parts of the engine along with specs.

Other features include a rubber fan belt that operates the generator, pulleys and fan. The fuel pump has a operating activator and a clear fuel bowl, the distributor and coil wires assemble in actual firing order and a starter and solenoid mount on a flywheel housing. 

It moves and operates like an actual V-8 engine and you can see it all courtesy of the clear engine parts!

Model makers ages 13 years old and older with Level 5 experience are graded to assemble the model. Glue is required as well as the ability to assemble parts with screws. Paint is optional.

At 1:4 Scale the engine measures 12 inches long. I can’t wait to see it work!

I never was much of a mechanic, unlike my older brothers. I wish I knew more about engines. The Visible V-8 Engine model kit will help me understand the complexity of an internal combustion, gas powered engine.

I may have my grandson help me put it together. What a great way to learn things together!

The Book Bus

As long as I can remember I’ve always loved books and reading.

When I was a child I often used my lunch money to buy books at the Scholastic Books stand outside the cafeteria.

I’d come home starving after school and my mom would fuss at me. But, I think that she was secretly proud of me for wanting to read so much.

Later on when I was a little older I’d spend each day at the library, hitchhike to the next town to visit the bookstore and frequent used book shops.

In The Book Bus, published by Schiffer Kids, Melanie Moore provides the story, Brian Wray writes the book and artist Mike Helm contributes the colorful art for kids to look at.

The oversize hardbound children’s book comes with a dust cover, 

Tilly the farm bus/truck went about her chores.

At night the small girl of Tilly’s human family would come into the barn where Tilly was parked and using a flashlight, would read books.

Tilly loved listening to stories and would often dream of the various adventures told in each book.

Before too long the girl grew up and Tilly’s gathered dust and wondered what was her use.

I wonder if Tilly visited my hometown? Every week a truck/bus would drive down the streets providing kids books to read and cherish.

Pearls Seeks Enlightenment

Cartoonist Stephen Pastis was bored. The pandemic was in full swing and he decided to go on a road trip. So he did. A lot of places.

But when he found himself in the middle of wasteland and in desperate need of the bathroom he somehow managed to find a small cluster of buildings-that were closed.

Frantically he knocked on one building's door. A man answered. The building was an art gallery in the middle of nowhere.

The man allowed him to use the a bathroom.

In gratitude Stephen attempted to give him one his softbound book collection of his comic strip as payment.

The man refused, he didn’t read comic strips. Eventually Stephen persuaded him to take the book.

Pearls Seeks Enlightenment: A Pearls Before Swine Treasury, published by Andrews McMeel Publishing, reflects Stephen’s bizarre life as chronicled above.  Trust me, the man seems to be a magnet for the unusual. 

You have to admit a comic strip mainly focusing on a rodent and pig and their companions is a bit of a stretch.

And yet it works.

Off the wall, irreverent and weird the comic strip uses animals to mock, make fun of, provides commentaries and generally looks at life from a totally different perspective.

Both black and white and full color strips are included in the book along with the occasional commentary from the author/cartoonist.

Where else are you going to find a prophet ass on a hill, a genie that practices social distancing, the dangers of printer ink and so many more wonderfully offbeat takes on life.

Werecats Emergent

What would you do if, as a teenager, one Halloween night you are suddenly transformed into a feral Werecat?

What I find especially interesting about Werecats Emergent is how the author explores what it means to be a Werecat. He delves into what it means to have the human and feline personas vie against each other for control.

He also fleshes out each character giving them distinct personalities. He does this by delving into their history, family life, friends, family, work and personal associations.

I felt as if I knew each character and liked them despite their faults and choices. Even the ‘bad’ guys were real humans, albeit with wrong motivation and flaws.

Can the transformations truly be controlled? What happens when the red blood-lust becomes too strong and human reason vanishes? 

Even when certain base instincts can be tamed and channeled, what are the risks? What’s it like to live on the edge all the time not knowing what you might do if you lose control?

A human/feline hybrid is unstable and lives under the constant threat of burning out in a horrific manner. It must satiate its killer instinct someway.

This book has it all: international intrigue, spies, government covert operations, hints of horror and the supernatural, secret labs and hideouts, a drug and criminal cartel, a storm at sea, action, adventure and plot twists and turns-the list goes on and on. Phew! I’m tired keeping up on it all.

Republic Thunderstreak “Thunderbirds” F-84F

Back in the 1950s jet aircraft were still relatively new. Barely a decade had passed since World War II and jet technology was in its infancy.

Most commercial flights were still using prop aircraft. The military was the chief user of jet aircraft. Early jet fighters and transports seem clumsy and clunky as compared to modern jet aircraft. And yet there is something fascinating about their design, shape, and capabilities.

As a kid growing up in the early Jet Age I was fascinated by the new military aircraft. That was a time when the sound barrier was broken, radical new air-frame designs were tested-along with new engines, cockpit designs and instrumentation and the early stages of the space program.

Pioneering engineering and endless possibilities abound. The sky was the limit!

Monogram’s 1:48 Scale Republic Thunderstreak “Thunderbirds” F-84F  U.S. Air Force jet is a marvel of a miniature and highly detailed recreation of the aircraft.

Designed for modelers over the age of 12 years old it requires a Level 4 expertise in model making. Paint, glue and decal application is needed.

The model box cover spotlights the F-84F with the jet front and center with three other aircraft flying in formation behind it. Side panels include photo and specs.

I happen to live close to an airbase and jets of all sorts fly overhead on missions and training flights. They never cease to amaze me.

Like all model kits time is important. Don’t waste it. Take your time, carefully follow the instructions and never (NEVER!) detach more parts from the part trees than you need to complete one assemble stage.

Instructions, decals and five plastic wrapped part trees are included. Assembly is easy if you follow the instructions and match part numbers on the pages with the part numbers on the part trees.

The F-84F model kit has a huge decal sheet with lots of decals. Any painting should be done before the aircraft model is complete and decals added when the plane is assembled. Again, take it easy, slow and meticulous.

Pay particular attention to the landing gear, extra tanks, weapons and cockpit. A pilot is even included.

Put it all together and take flight as you add this stunning new aircraft model to your collection.

71 Mach 1 Mustang 007 Diamonds Are Forever

Back in 1971 the producers of the James Bond films found themselves in a dilemma. Their last Bond film: On Her Majesty’s’ Secret Service, had not performed as well as they had liked, mainly because the actor they chose to replace Sean Connery did not work out.

Producers practically begged Sean Connery to reprise his role as Bond. He agreed, at a hefty price.

Diamonds Are Forever saw Connery back as Bond and the movie was huge success.

Bond’s new car in the film was a 71 Mach 1 Mustang. It captivated audiences and served to modernize and Americanize the new Bond film.

The one scene I remember in the movie with the Mach 1 is when Bond maneuvered it down a narrow alley on two wheels. 

 But due to an editorial mix-up when the car emerged on the other end of the alley was on the opposite two wheels-going from left to right.

The 1:25 Scale Revell 71 Mach 1 Mustang 007 Diamonds Are Forever model kit box features a scene from the movie where Bond was being chased through the streets of Los Vegas by the police at night. Box side panels feature additional Mach 1 photos, complete specs and a short description of the scene from the movie.

The model kit is rated for 12-year-olds and up and at a Level 4 modeling skill. Paint, glue and decal application are necessary.

The plastic kit box contains the body chassis (with tires) in a clear plastic bag. Other plastic bags contain various car parts in solid white, chrome and clear plastic.

Parts can be removed from the trees using a model snip or Xacto blade. Minimal flashing and attachment point cleanup is needed.

Parts are engineered to fit snugly together with no gaps, mismatches or rough edges. Tooling is top notch with clean contact surfaces and insertion points.

Once completed the model kits measures almost 7 1/2 inches. One hundred and twenty-one parts are in the box.

All toll there are 11-part trees, the chassis and tires, instructions and decals.

The model is easily assembled if you follow the numbered parts in the instructions. Snip out only the parts necessary for each step of assembly.

Although not as recognizable as the James Bond Aston Martin DB5 the Mach 1 Mustang is still a formidable car well suited to accommodate James Bond and his lovely ladies.

Marvel at the engine via the car’s opening hood, light and bumper assemblies, interior details and the fully detailed undercarriage with exhaust, suspension, engine underside, wheels and tires.
