Star Trek #1

When the popularity of Star Trek re-blossomed in the mid to late 1970s Paramount Studios decided to produce a new Star Trek TV show starring the original cast.

Then Star Wars happened.  The Star Trek TV show relaunch was scrapped and instead a Star Trek movie took its place.

During the late 1970s Marvel Comics was struggling financially.  Newsstand sales were drying up and other avenues for selling comic book were also dwindling.

At one point Marvel Comics was on the verge of being terminated.

Marvel Comics Editor and Chief Jim Shooter was constantly on the look out for new ways to make money for the company.  One such way was to publish movie and TV show adaptations.

The Star Wars adaptation was a financial shot in the arm for Marvel.  Some say it kept the company in business.

Marvel continued to publish adaptations with Star Trek being one of them.

The first issue was the adaptation of the Star Trek The Motion Picture. Marv Wolfman adapted the script and Dave Cockrum provided the art, with asset by Klaus Jansen.

The adaptation faithfully followed the movie with a few extra scenes thrown in for dramatic effect.

Sales for the comic book were respectable and other issues followed after the film adaptation.

After Marvel’s run DC Comics took over the franchise for a number of years with the series eventually returning to Marvel along with other adaptations of all of the Star Trek TV series up until Voyager.
