Female superheroes are all the rage. It used to be female superhero comic books, toys and other female collectible merchandise sales were mostly lackluster when compared to male dominated merchandise.
That’s not true anymore. As more and more women get into collecting and women are recognizing and promoting their strengths and worth and as our society transforms to be more inclusive female characters sell.
That was not always the case. When Marvel Comics took the daring step to introduce two powerful female characters back in the 1970s there was barely a whimper.
She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel were both female characters who were opposite sex duplicates of already established male superheroes: The Hulk and Captain Marvel.
Issue #1 introduces readers to Carol Danvers. However this is not her first appearance. She does not know she is Ms. Marvel. Suffering from a series of blackouts she has no idea that her alter ego is taking on criminals.
In her first outing as Ms. Marvel she comes face to face with one of Spider-Man’s deadliest foes: The Scorpion.
Gerry Conway provides the script while veteran artist John Buscema pencils the issue.
It’s an unusual set up for a superhero epic and makes for an intriguing read.
Near mint Raw copies go for around $50 and slabbed issues for close to $300.
